The upcoming “Star Wars” movie starring Daisy Ridley, who reprises her role as Rey, has found a new screenwriter known for their work in espionage. At the Star Wars Celebration 2022, Lucasfilm unveiled plans for three new “Star Wars” movies. The one that generated the most buzz was the one slated for Daisy Ridley’s return as Rey, set fifteen years after the events of “The Rise of Skywalker.” Originally, acclaimed documentary filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy was set to make her feature film directorial debut with this movie. However, like many “Star Wars” productions, the film encountered multiple delays and underwent two rounds of script revisions. Now, it appears that the production is back on schedule, as a writer known for sequels and science fiction will tackle the screenplay.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, George Nolfi, famed for his work on Ocean’s Twelve and The Bourne Ultimatum, has been enlisted to write the script for an upcoming Star Wars movie focusing on the character Rey. Notably, Nolfi also wrote and directed 2011’s The Adjustment Bureau. However, it should be noted that while The Hollywood Reporter refers to this project as the “New Jedi Order,” neither Lucasfilm nor Disney has officially confirmed a title for the film.
Nolfi is now the third author to come on board for the challenging Star Wars movie project. Originally, Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson were assigned to write it, but they left the film before director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy came aboard. Later, Steven Knight, known for Peaky Blinders, took over scriptwriting duties but also departed in October 2024. This departure pushed back production, and as a result, the planned December 2026 release date for the Daisy Ridley-led Star Wars film was taken by Ice Age 6.
Sounds Like a Very Different ‘Star Wars’ Movie Than Fans Might Expect
It’s exciting news that Nolfi will attempt a draft for the next Star Wars film, but it doesn’t guarantee the movie is completely on course again due to previous writers leaving the project. Although it was announced in 2022, the Rey-led Star Wars film appears to be less prioritized now, as a Shawn Levy-directed Star Wars film featuring Ryan Gosling has emerged. This other film might occupy the December 2027 slot Disney reserved; thus, fans may have to wait until 2028 for the Rey-led Star Wars movie.
It’s intriguing to consider Nolfi for the role in a “Star Wars” production, given his background in creating thrillers. His appointment, combined with Steven Knight, seems to hint at a unique narrative and atmosphere for this potential “Star Wars” film. With Nolfi’s work on “Ocean’s 12,” it’s plausible that Rey will continue to gather a group of Jedi. However, the creative team behind the scenes could imply that the movie may resemble the style of “Andor” rather than “The Force Awakens.” It remains exciting to see if Nolfi is now involved in linking this upcoming Rey-focused Jedi film with future “Star Wars” projects, as a November 2024 report suggested several “Star Wars” projects were planned around Daisy Ridley’s Jedi character.
