As a lifelong art enthusiast with a penchant for all things vibrant and hip-hop, I was absolutely thrilled to witness Rhymezlikedimez‘s stunning collaboration with Amazon Echo at SCOPE Miami Beach this year! Having grown up with N.E.R.D.’s infectious beats and a deep appreciation for animation style that mirrors the contemporary rap landscape, I found myself immersed in a world where art, music, and technology seamlessly intertwined.
The SCOPE Art Show in Miami Beach wrapped its 23rd annual show on December 8. Hypeart held its first-ever showcase at SCOPE during the height of Miami Art Week. The lineup included an installation by Amazon Echo in partnership with interdisciplinary artist Robin Velghe, known by the pseudonym Rhymezlikedimez. TopMob’s Creative Director, Paul Heavener, takes us through a day at the renowned art show and behind the scenes of the Rhymezlikedimez x Amazon Echo showcase.

For those new to Velghe’s art, simply gaze upon the next rainbow. Filled with lively, colorful patterns reminiscent of a kaleidoscope, playful, comic-style characters, and energetic personalities, this Belgian animator embodies joy. His partnerships with Stone Throws, Adult Swim, Erykah Badu, and Travis Scott demonstrate his talent for creating vivid worlds and an animation style that mirrors the diverse culture of modern hip-hop music.
In the song “Windows” by N.E.R.D., from their album “Seeing Sounds” (2008), the line “The eyes are the window to the soul” is used. For Velghe’s SCOPE Miami show, this phrase serves as a theme, taking us on a musical journey through today’s top rappers, R&B, and soul artists, as seen through the lens of Puff. The primary character in Velghe’s work is a soft matter entity, representing Velghe’s passion for hip-hop and embodiment of the artist’s personality and alter ego, Rhymezlikedimez.
Rhymezlikedimez’s exhibit shared space with an artist collective, Hypeart’s pick, featuring Stickymonger, UFO907, and KATSU. The booth centerpiece, titled “Fly Or Die“, mirrors the theme of N.E.R.D., showcasing Puff in a pink shirt and brown shorts, enamored and floating due to love’s intoxication, thanks to Cupid’s arrow. This sculpture complements the animated short “Ride or Die“, where Puff, smitten by chance, follows a beautiful cloud-like woman along Mulholland Drive.
Visitors were asked to put on either Amazon Echo Frames (with Alexa) or Carrera Smart Glasses, then step into a private viewing area to watch the animation. Rhymezlikedimez artfully designed Puff’s inner realm with rugs and carpets adorned with airbrushed graphics. Inside, there was a mirror affixed at the top of the setup for guests to snap photos while wearing the Amazon Echo frames. Puff’s Miami Playlist, featuring songs by Anderson .Paak, Stereolab, Janet Jackson and others, breathed life into an engaging narrative, demonstrating the smooth functionality of Amazon’s tech-enhanced eyewear. The Amazon Echo Frames, equipped with Alexa’s complete set of features, enable users to listen to music, take calls, and interact with Alexa in a stylish, trendy manner.
