Rian Johnson’s Shocking Pivot: ‘Knives Out’ & ‘Star Wars’ Fans Left Wondering What’s Next!

As an ardent admirer, I’ve been eagerly anticipating any news about the potential comeback of my favorite character within the Star Wars universe. Similarly, enthusiasts of Daniel Craig’s spellbinding performances, particularly in the Benoit Blanc series, have been yearning to know what the next thrilling escapade for this iconic character will be after “Wake Up, Dead Man”. However, the director’s latest insights into his future projects hint that neither of these captivating intellectual properties (IPs) will claim his immediate focus, as his upcoming film promises to be a fresh and uncharted territory altogether.

In an interview with Collider, Johnson shared that he’s cooking up a fresh concept, a trait he’s recognized for thanks to the Knives Out series and Poker Face TV show. Regarding the potential for a fourth Knives Out film, he hinted that it could be his next venture.

As long as Daniel Craig continues to be enthusiastic about the role and we come up with fresh, thrilling ideas for the series, I remain passionate about the mystery genre. Despite working on three consecutive films in this genre, I don’t feel drained by it, but my next project is an original work that falls outside of the mystery category. What appeals to me about mysteries is the ‘whodunit,’ which, like sci-fi, offers a wide range of subgenres. In contrast to my previous film ‘Glass Onion,’ our upcoming movie ‘Wake Up Dead Man’ presents a stark contrast, as it’s dramatically different.

What Happened to Rian Johnson’s ‘Star Wars’ Movies?

Rian Johnson initially joined the Star Wars universe by directing The Last Jedi, a movie that sparked much debate within the franchise. Despite this, there were whispers of him returning to create a new trilogy of Star Wars films. During Star Wars Celebration in 2023, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy gave one of the latest updates on this possibility. At that point, she mentioned that Johnson was still connected to the Star Wars franchise.

Rian Johnson and I chat frequently, but his schedule is incredibly packed as he’s working on another ‘Glass Onion’ project, and after that, it’s hard to say what else he has planned. He’s keen to return to work, but since this involves a significant time commitment, the decision is ultimately his.

It appears that maybe Johnson feels overburdened with numerous ideas he wants to explore, making it challenging for him to dedicate time to the extensive work involved in producing three “Star Wars” movies. With multiple upcoming “Star Wars” films on the horizon, the likelihood of a new Johnson-directed project seems increasingly unlikely. However, his next film, titled “Wake Up, Dead Man,” will be hitting theaters this fall as part of the release of “Knives Out.
