Richard Gere and Michael Fassbender Tease Their New Spy Thriller Series

As a seasoned cinema enthusiast with decades of film viewing under my belt, I must say that the upcoming series, “The Agency,” has piqued my interest significantly. The all-star cast, led by Michael Fassbender and Richard Geere, is nothing short of captivating, and the political espionage genre is one that I always find myself drawn to.

Exclusively in Entertainment Weekly, actors Richard Geere and Michael Fassbender are marketing their upcoming spy-thriller series titled The Agency. Joining them in the cast are Jeffrey Wright (known for his roles in Westworld, The Batman, and American Fiction) and Jodie Turner-Smith (famous for Queen & Slim and The Acolyte). This highly anticipated series is set to premiere on Paramount+ with Showtime in the late fall. The storyline revolves around political espionage, inspired by the French hit series Le Bureau des Légendes.

The Agency tracks a secret CIA operative, known as the Martian (played by Fassbender), once he’s instructed to leave his hidden profession and rejoin their London office. Not long after, an old love interest resurfaces, causing chaos in his life and potentially revealing his true identity, jeopardizing his job, and putting his mission at risk. In an interview, Fassbender discussed the complexities of portraying Martian.

This character seeks redemption for his soul by navigating two significant relationships: one with his long-lost daughter, whom he hasn’t met properly in six years, and another with his lover, who is separated from him when his mission concludes. His profession requires a certain degree of sociopathic traits to ensure a peaceful sleep, perform effectively the following day, and mentally separate his work life from personal life.

In the previous year, Michael Fassbender featured prominently in “The Killer”, another gripping action-thriller under the direction of David Fincher (known for movies like “Seven” and “Gone Girl”). This production was highly praised by critics. Fassbender’s role involved portraying an assassin grappling with an internal struggle as he confronted his employers. Notably, “The Killer” was adapted from a French project – the graphic novel series sharing its title, authored by Alexis Nolent and illustrated by Luc Jacamon.

How The New Series Will Compare To The Original

In the series titled “The Agency,” viewers are introduced to Fassbender’s character following his six-year stint in deep undercover work. He now finds himself navigating a fresh chapter of life and reporting to a superior, his boss. Bosko, played by Gere, is the head of the London branch, known for his vibrant past as an undercover agent himself. Interestingly, this is only the second television role that Gere, a seasoned movie star, has undertaken in his career. Excited about the original series, Gere and his wife found themselves captivated by it. Speaking on working on “The Agency” and venturing into television production today, the Hollywood icon shared his enthusiasm for the project.

Nowadays, there are stunning productions airing on TV that were unheard of during my childhood. Back then, TV wasn’t something you actively sought out; it was more like an alternative choice. The quality wasn’t exceptional compared to movies. However, the content we see on TV now rivals or even surpasses most movie screen productions. It’s become challenging to even label it as television anymore because it has evolved into a different medium altogether.

Gere emphasized the importance of making Bosko seem authentic to him. He wanted to portray the emotional burden that comes with being a field agent – dealing with danger, taking lives – which Bosko carries. In this role, Bosko is both a stern spy boss and an unusual mentor to his agents.

Apart from their acting roles, these two stars also shared their fondness for Bosko and Martian’s intricate relationship. The upcoming show, The Agency, seems poised to deliver an exhilarating rollercoaster of suspense. As Fassbender put it, “There are certainly many nerve-wracking scenes.” Gere hinted at the escalating tension throughout each episode, with every installment offering a fresh twist or shocking revelation. He further mentioned that this new adaptation would carve its unique identity distinct from the original French series.

Hopefully, it will share the exceptional traits of its predecessor, yet it’s important to note that it originated approximately a decade ago and ran for five years. The global landscape has significantly changed over the past decade, and the conflicts the world was dealing with then are not the same as those today. This production, however, appears to be highly relevant to current times. It seems to be very much a product of today’s political climate.
