Ridley Scott Bluntly Explained Why It Took So Long To Make Gladiator II

As a gamer who has lived through multiple generations of blockbuster movies, I must say that the long-awaited sequel to Ridley Scott‘s epic masterpiece, Gladiator, feels like a triumphant return to the Roman Colosseum after a 20-year hiatus. It’s not every day we get a second chance to witness Russell Crowe’s iconic performance as Maximus, even if it comes in the form of a newcomer, Paul Mescal, portraying an adult Lucius.

In its time, the movie Gladiator was incredibly successful. It managed to be both a financial powerhouse, earning $465 million worldwide in 2000, and an awards sensation, bagging several Oscars such as Best Actor and Best Picture. Back then, any studio would have jumped at the chance to produce a sequel immediately with hopes of repeating that success. Yet, we’re only getting Gladiator II now. The question is, why the delay?

Ridley Scott stated that the concept of a Gladiator sequel wasn’t discussed back then since everyone shifted their focus to different ventures after its release. As people began working on various projects, Gladiator took a backseat in our collective consciousness. In simpler terms, it didn’t cross our minds to make another Gladiator movie because we were all busy with other tasks, causing the idea to fade into the background.

Frankly, we were all busy. So, honestly, no one really thought about it.

It’s not entirely unexpected that a Gladiator sequel wasn’t immediately considered, given that Russell Crowe was at the peak of his career during that time. After the success of Gladiator, Crowe was in high demand and went on to receive three consecutive Best Actor Oscar nominations. Ridley Scott, who directed Gladiator, also released two highly acclaimed films the following year, including Black Hawk Down, which is equally impressive.

In contrast to many other sequels that have graced our movie screens years after their predecessors, “Gladiator II” might come across as an unexpected choice for a follow-up. One could argue that this type of film typically either receives a quick sequel or none at all. However, Ridley Scott has revealed that the enduring popularity of the original “Gladiator” over time was what prompted him to feel compelled to explore the possibility of a second installment, expressing his desire to delve deeper into the story for “the number one’s” sake.

Indeed, by the finale of the initial movie, Russell Crowe’s character Maximus had met his end. This means any potential sequel, such as “Gladiator II”, would have to grapple with this fact. Initially, there were proposals to resurrect Maximus in the storyline, but these ideas never seem to have gained much traction. Instead, the upcoming movie will be set many years later and will feature Paul Mescal portraying a grown-up Lucius, a character who was merely a child in the original film.

It appears that waiting over two decades to make the sequel of Gladiator was a wise decision. Ridley Scott considers this new film among his finest work, which is quite an assertive claim. We’ll see how accurate that is when the movie premieres next month, but the early anticipation for Gladiator II has been significant. It remains to be seen if Gladiator II will achieve the same level of success, both financially and in terms of awards, as its predecessor did.
