As a movie critic with over three decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen my fair share of blockbusters, flops, and everything in between. When it comes to historical epics, few directors can match the grandeur and spectacle that Ridley Scott brings to the table.

In a new turn of events, brothers Moses and Ramses engage once more as director Ridley Scott’s historical epic “Exodus: Gods and Kings” (2014) becomes available for free streaming starting December 1st. Christian Bale and bald Joel Edgerton headline this biblical tale, which didn’t resonate with either critics or audiences when it hit theaters a decade ago. This overlooked historical film is also one of Scott’s lesser-rated projects on Rotten Tomatoes.

Currently, the movie “Exodus: Gods and Kings” has received a low score of 30% on the Tomatometer based on 207 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Similarly, viewers haven’t been overly impressed as the Popcornmeter score stands at a modest 35%, backed by more than 50,000 ratings. Despite this, the film earned a relatively decent “B-” CinemaScore and nearly doubled its production budget of $140 million. This means that “Exodus: Gods and Kings,” directed by Ridley Scott in 2014, generated a total revenue of approximately $268.2 million worldwide.

The film appears more captivating than its ratings suggest, and it showcases some grandiose scenes. Tubi provides several other titles by Ridley Scott for streaming at no cost, such as Black Hawk Down, Someone to Watch Over Me, and Matchstick Men. Interestingly, these films have a higher rating on Rotten Tomatoes than Gods and Kings.

Ridley Scott’s ‘Gladiator II’ Is Now Thriving at the Box Office

In January 2024, Ridley Scott’s underappreciated movie “Exodus: Gods and Kings” made it to Netflix Top 10 at position 4, with approximately 19 million hours watched. This indicates a keen interest in the film, and its availability for free on Tubi should only boost its popularity further. However, the recent excitement surrounding Scott is not about “Gods and Kings,” but rather the much-anticipated sequel to the 2000 hit, “Gladiator.” The movie is generating buzz across the board, largely due to its breathtaking production design. Pedro Pascal, the star of “Gladiator II,” recently shared his awe at the historical epic’s sets in a new interview with Paramount Pictures.

Arthur Max’s production design is exceptional and unrivaled. I’ve worked on numerous large-scale sets, but none have compared to this one. Arthur has truly brought reality to life with his work.

Despite facing tough competition from the number one hit Wicked, Gladiator II has proven to be a box office success following its first weekend release. With an impressive $55 million opening domestically, the collaboration between Denzel Washington and Ridley Scott is on track for a global total of approximately $232.4 million as of now. In a recent interview, Washington himself praised the grandiose production design of the film, commenting that it was “the biggest film I’ve been on. It’s like Cecil B. DeMille on steroids.

With an 83% Popcornmeter rating, previously known as Rotten Tomatoes audience score and a “B” CinemaScore, Gladiator II is likely to keep drawing crowds during its second week in theaters. Despite this, due to the five-day Thanksgiving holiday, Moana 2, which is expected to dominate the box office for Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s newest Disney movie, will probably take first place, pushing Gladiator II into third position.

This week, the top-grossing film “Wicked” aims to secure No. 1 position at the box office during the Thanksgiving holiday season in the U.S. However, if you prefer a more mature option, “Gladiator II” is available. On the other hand, family-oriented films like “Moana 2” and “Wicked” are expected to attract larger audiences as we approach the end of December. For those who’d rather stay home, starting Dec. 1, you can stream “Exodus: Gods and Kings” on Tubi.
