The recent collaboration between RIMOWA and British artist Ptolemy Mann has undoubtedly caught my attention, not just because of its stunning aesthetics, but also due to the profound story behind it.
RIMOWA has added vibrant “Gloss Blue” and “Gloss Ginger Yellow” options to its Essential Cabin collection, which are made from lightweight polycarbonate. The brand has collaborated with British artist Ptolemy Mann to customize these suitcases, resulting in her unique artistic touch being applied onto the hardshells. Specifically, she’s transferred the bold strokes and vivid hues of her “Thresholds” art series onto the suitcase shells.
The spirit of Thresholds is expressed through a multi-layered ink print reminiscent of Mann’s brushwork, with this sitting atop a textured polycarbonate base adding both physical and symbolic depth. Moreover, a blue brushstroke is noticeable on the inner flex divider as well.
Mann and RIMOWA’s collaboration was a fortuitous one. It began when Mann was living in Copenhagen as part of an artist residency program and RIMOWA was looking to the city for color inspiration to use on its 2024 product line. “It was a total coincidence that Rimowa also had been looking to Copenhagen for inspiration for this year’s collection. The inky dark blue water of the canals being interrupted by swimming figures—it’s a city full of water and colorful architecture—which I think comes across in the final result,” the artist said in an interview with Artnet. “The idea of taking an artwork with you when you travel really resonated. I’ve decided to travel with creative intent. Every trip has to be meaningful and considered.”
