Ringo Starr is (finally) satisfied with Sam Mendes’ Beatles biopic script

Just before his 85th birthday, Ringo Starr shared in an interview with The New York Times that he had a comprehensive discussion with Sam Mendes, the director of the upcoming four separate biopics about each member of the Beatles. These biopics will offer insights into their lives from individual viewpoints.

Over the span of two days in April 2025, I found myself poring over every line of the script alongside Mendes, with Ringo providing an abundance of insightful comments, as we painstakingly fact-checked the material. The section that required adjustments was centered around Ringo’s family and his marriage to Maureen Starkey Tigrett.

Ringo Starr first encountered Maureen Cox, known as Tigrett, in the year 1962. The two eventually tied the knot in 1965, but their marriage ended ten years later in 1975. During their union, they welcomed three children into the world: Zak Starkey, who played drums for Oasis and later The Who; their son Jason; and their daughter Lee. Sadly, Tigrett passed away from leukemia in 1994.

Following his speech (implying his approval), Ringo expressed his contentment with the modifications and conveyed a “peace and harmony” message towards Mendes.

In previous news, it’s been revealed that Paul Mescal is set to portray Paul McCartney, Joseph Quinn will take on the role of George Harrison, Barry Keoghan will play Ringo Starr, and Harris Dickinson will embody John Lennon. Additionally, it has been announced that the screenplay writers for each biopic will be Jez Butterworth (known for Ford v Ferrari), Peter Straughan (Conclave), and Jack Thorne (Adolescence)).

Speaking of Keoghan (from Saltburn), who’ll portray Ringo, in a recent conversation, he mentioned that he visited Starr at his residence to get ready for the movie and learn about the musician’s unique behaviors.

On “Jimmy Kimmel Live”, he mentioned that he had been asked to play the drums, but clarified he wasn’t playing for Ringo. While conversing with him, he admitted feeling nervous, similar to how he was feeling at that moment. However, Ringo reassured him by saying, “You can look at me.” His role was to observe and study Ringo, aiming to humanize him in his performance and convey emotions rather than merely imitating him.

Indeed, it appears they reconciled amicably, as Keoghan observed that Ringo was “simply delightful” during their shared moments.
