As a lifelong movie buff with a soft spot for epic fantasy sagas, I must say that The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 finale was nothing short of mesmerizing. The culmination of Sauron’s manipulative schemes and Galadriel’s unyielding resolve left me on the edge of my seat.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 finale brought together Sauron (Charlie Vickers) and Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) after spending eight episodes apart, but the final fight scene faced one major hurdle. The latest season featured the Dark Lord manipulating his way through Middle-earth into prominence, culminating in the creation of the titular Rings of Power. During Sauron’s final confrontation with archenemy (and potential love interest), Galadriel, The Rings of Power production had to halt in order to pull off a vital special effect for Vickers’ character.

The Rings of Power Season 2 finale ended with Sauron fighting Galadriel on a mountaintop, before morphing into different versions of himself in an attempt to emotionally manipulate her. For much of the season, audiences watched Sauron in his Annatar disguise while in Eregion, but he finally returned as Halbrand in the finale for a brief moment. In an interview with CinemaBlend, Charlie Vickers revealed that the one major issue filming the complex sequence was growing his beard back for Halbrand, and he was not given much time to do so.

…”God transformed from Halbrand to Annatar. I believe I performed the Halbrand tasks on a Monday morning. To attempt to grow some scruff, they granted me the weekend. However, my beard was quite sparse. It grew minimally but they still needed to fill it in with color. Yet, it’s not straightforward when he is clean-shaven, and adding the stubble effect was necessary.

Over the course of a weekend, Vickers decided against shaving, resulting in a faint yet noticeable beard. Interestingly enough, this scruffy look ended up working in his favor as it resembled a “glimmering reminiscence” for Galadriel, according to the actor.

He resembled Halbrand, yet there were subtle differences. For instance, his hair had a curly texture, and his facial hair was less dense. Yet, it complemented him well as he seemed to be an enhanced, shinier recollection of Halbrand.

Galadriel Had to Play Sauron

In the final battle of Season 2 in “The Rings of Power”, Sauron cleverly disguised himself as both Galadriel and Celebrimbor, making the situation even more intricate. This was quite challenging for Morfydd Clark, who had to deliver a completely new portrayal as the malevolent figure. In this scene, Vickers temporarily handed over his role to his fellow actor for a brief yet complex exchange, a task arguably harder than just regrowing his hair.

In order for Morfydd to reprise her role as Galadriel but in a different way, she had to adopt a more stern demeanor, almost like Sauron himself. She needed to undergo a transformation and become a new version of the character, essentially playing against type. This process required a great deal of effort and time, as it involved shooting multiple takes and continually switching actors.

The climactic battle scene in Season 2 of “The Rings of Power” has sparked varied opinions, yet it’s undeniable that the actors gave their all to make it happen. It was rewarding to watch Galadriel engage physically with Sauron, following his deception as Halbrand earlier. What made this moment even more impactful was seeing Galadriel decisively cut off Sauron’s malevolent influence and flatly refuse his offer to become queen. While fans of the romantic pairing might feel let down, those invested in the franchise can likely appreciate that the show is staying true to its (very flexible) source material.
