'Rings of Power' Season 2 "Redeemed" Galadriel Says Morfydd Clark

As a seasoned movie buff with a soft spot for epic fantasy tales, I must say that The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has been nothing short of a thrilling journey so far. Morfydd Clark’s portrayal of Galadriel has been captivating and her character’s arc in Season 2, particularly her struggle with Sauron’s deception, has been nothing short of masterful storytelling.

In the second season of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” I, Elvish commander Galadriel (Morfydd Clark), carry a burdensome thought: I was tricked by Sauron (Charlie Vickers) when he disguised himself as a seemingly virtuous man named Halbrand. However, in a recent chat with Collider, Morfydd Clark hinted that my character gets an opportunity for redemption in this new season.

In the opening of Season 2 of The Rings of Power, viewers delve into Sauron’s past, which unfolds after the demise of Morgoth, the notorious villain from J.R.R. Tolkien’s original tales. Sauron aims to fill Morgoth’s shoes but gets deceived by Adar (played by Sam Hazeldine) and the orcs. Yet, his weakened position doesn’t last long as he reemerges and regains strength.

In the Amazon Prime series “The Rings of Power,” Galadriel encounters Halbrand (who is actually Sauron) on a raft in the middle of the sea. The audience gets multiple perspectives of this pivotal encounter during both Season 1 and Season 2. Charlie Vickers, who plays Sauron, explained in an interview with Collider that these various viewpoints influenced not only how the audience perceives the character but also his performance as Sauron.

I enjoyed replicating that scene in a small pool in England, as it helped create a moment of reflection before hearing Galadriel underwater. The entire sequence was beneficial for me, adding depth and context to the initial episodes of the first season, effectively enriching its overall atmosphere.

From another perspective, Clark too commented on Galadriel’s redemption, which became evident as Sauron’s power grew during Season 2. She expressed, “I believe it softened Galadriel slightly to realize he had made this choice. She didn’t release all his darkness, but she remains unaware that, unfortunately,…” Clark also highlighted the battle between Galadriel and Sauron at the end of Season 2 as a moment of redemption for Galadriel.

Regarding Galadriel, when she states ‘The door is shut,’ it implies a strong possibility of her demise. Yet, she’s determined to push through with all her might. Despite the dire situation, she manages to preserve her virtues and redeem herself. It was fascinating to observe how deeply she could be affected by this character, only to rise again, maintaining her noble character.

In the grand universe of cinema, much like a Jedi can succumb to the dark side in the epic Star Wars saga, characters in Tolkien’s world also grapple with the eternal struggle between good and evil. As a devoted cinephile, I recall that even in the original Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Fellowship of the Ring, legendary fantasy author J.R.R. Tolkien subtly hinted at Galadriel’s internal battle with temptation.

In the soothsaying Galadriel’s Mirror, she sees an all-powerful image of herself with The Ring:

Instead of replacing the Dark Lord with a Queen, I will transform into a magnificent and fearsome entity, resembling the splendor of dawn and dusk. Radiant as the ocean, the sun, and the snow-capped mountains, yet terrifying like the fury of a storm and lightning! Powerful beyond the earth’s foundations. All shall admire me and be filled with despair.

However, at the culmination of her vision, she asserts, “I have successfully completed the trial.” Even mighty Gandalf succumbed to this temptation, highlighting a crucial aspect of The Lord of the Rings – no one is immune to the corrupting influence of Sauron’s ring.
