Rings of Power Star Rory Kinnear Reveals How the Series Will Handle Tom Bombadil in Season 2

As a die-hard Lord of the Rings fan with decades of fandom under my belt, I can hardly contain my excitement for the introduction of Tom Bombadil in The Rings of Power. It’s been a long time coming, and while Peter Jackson’s movies were masterpieces in their own right, they left out this enigmatic character that has captivated our imaginations since Tolkien first penned him.

Ever since his introduction in J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings,” Tom Bombadil has been largely absent from adaptations, with Peter Jackson’s trilogy being an exception. However, the enigmatic character is set to step into live-action for the first time in the second season of Amazon Prime Video’s series, “The Rings of Power.” Recently, Rory Kinnear, who plays Tom Bombadil in the show, spoke with GamesRadar about the distinct differences between Peter Jackson’s films and the reasons behind the character’s long-awaited screen debut.

“In essence, while additional elements may not strictly propel the plot forward in a literal sense, Peter Jackson pointed out that Gandalf is an extraordinary character who embodies wisdom, joy, and a profound understanding of humanity, history, and the earth. This portrayal symbolizes the essence of our world and Middle-earth.”

Up to this point, Tom Bombadil’s part in the storyline remains vague, yet Daniel Weyman from The Rings of Power hinted at significant encounters between his character, The Stranger, and Bombadil. Weyman emphasized that while Bombadil might not physically appear in every book scene, he is omnipresent due to his extraordinary nature. He also mentioned that it seems as if they are both on a shared journey with the readers, and he finds this aspect intriguing for his character’s development.

“Even when he’s not physically present, his impact on you is so strong that he lingers in your thoughts due to the unique interactions you’ve shared together.”

Due to “The Rings of Power” being a television series, it allows for extended narrative possibilities. In an interview, Kinnear discussed the benefits of weekly episodes and commended showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay for their innovative approach to character development and positioning within the story, which differs from Tolkien’s original approach.

“On extended television series with multiple seasons, there’s ample time to delve into intricate narratives. Showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay have crafted a unique role for this character that deviates from his portrayal in the books. Although they are utilizing this character, they are employing him differently than how Tolkien originally conceived him.”

The television series titled “The Rings of Power” debuted in September 2022. Set far before J.R.R. Tolkien’s books, this show delves deeper into Middle-earth’s history, depicting a time when evil resurfaces on the continent. As characters grapple with this resurgence of wickedness, the narrative unfolds. The upcoming second season is said to be ten times larger than the first, filled with battles reminiscent of those from Tolkien’s creative mind. It’s anticipated that it will pick up where the first season left off, focusing on Galadriel and her mission to eliminate Sauron while delving into Middle-earth’s Second Age. This era is significant for its creation of the first three Rings and the emergence of Sauron under the disguise of Annatar.

With the impending launch of its second season, the series has outpaced “The Boys” as Amazon Prime Video’s most watched show. The new season kicks off on August 29th with a three-episode premiere, followed by five episodes being released weekly until October 3rd. Fans can catch up on the first season, which is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
