As a long-time Tolkien fan and avid gamer, I was initially disappointed with the pacing of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” Season 1. The show had so much potential, but it felt like the story was bogged down by too many characters and underdeveloped plotlines. The lack of Tolkien-written dialogue and limited rights to the source text also added to my frustration.
Many fans found the first season of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” challenging to connect with. Despite some strong aspects – exploring Second Age stories untouched by Tolkien, filming in New Zealand’s stunning landscapes, and large budgets enabling elaborate sets, real props, and a mix of practical and CGI effects – several obstacles surfaced. These included the absence of dialogue penned by Tolkien himself, restricted access to the source text, and the challenges posed by the pandemic.
In the first season’s broadcast, one major concern emerged: the rhythm felt uneven. Launching such an intricate production is no simple feat, and the first season failed to pick up speed as it introduced a multitude of new characters, locations, and plotlines. Thankfully, the team behind the scenes assures us that they’ll work on improving the pacing in season 2.
Lindsey Weber, the executive producer, shared with Empire magazine that this season will see an escalation of storylines and a faster-paced rhythm in “The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power” series. With Sauron’s return and manipulation of events, viewers can anticipate new types of actions and witness Middle-earth in more frightening scenarios. Weber employed descriptors like “cataclysmic” to describe the show’s impending developments. Fans should prepare for an intensified experience as the series’ temperature rises alongside its Dark Lord.
The scale of Rings of Power battles will grow
As a gamer, I have to admit that the battles in Season 1 didn’t live up to my expectations. We had a few skirmishes here and there, but the epic showdowns were lacking. The biggest battle we had was between some peasants, some Orcs, and a few hundred Númenórean cavalry. It was decent, but I yearned for more. However, I’m excited to share that Season 2 is going to up the ante in terms of battles. We’re talking epic style encounters that will leave me on the edge of my seat!
Patrick McKay, one of the co-showrunners, shared with Empire that the major battle in Season 1 was intentionally made smaller and more like a skirmish. He mentioned that for Season 2, they aim to create something much larger and extensive, spanning over multiple days, weeks, months, and episodes. Charlotte Brändström, who directs half of Season 2, confirmed that this upcoming conflict will be ten times bigger than the previous one, bringing us closer to the epic scale of “The Return of the King” battles.
During the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, for example, thousands of human soldiers confronted over forty thousand soldiers of the Dark Lord. In Tolkien’s Second Age, numerous battles of similar magnitude occurred, along with even larger ones. A Gondorian captain in “The Return of the King” referred to the 7,000 men Aragorn attacked at the Black Gate as just the tip of the iceberg when it came to Gondor’s armies during that era. The creative team seems to have decided to amplify the scale of these battles.
Better pacing could be just what the doctor ordered
Understanding the challenge of filming during a pandemic is no simple feat. According to co-showrunner J.D. Payne in an interview with Collider, the lack of quarantines and pandemic procedures during the production of Season 2 has significantly expedited the process. In his words, “We’re not dealing with COVID on this one, which makes things move quicker than what we experienced in Season 1.”
In an interview conducted in 2023, Looper recommended that displeased Tolkien fans consider giving “The Rings of Power” a second chance. However, to improve its poor audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes and regain the loyalty of dedicated viewers, the show might benefit from concentrating on a smaller number of narratives and expanding their duration. By merging characters, aligning plotlines, and advancing the story more gradually in Season 2, it could potentially enhance viewer engagement and satisfaction.
As a longtime fan of epic fantasy series, I can personally attest to the importance of a strong second season. Having been captivated by Amazon’s “The Wheel of Time” despite its slow start, I was pleasantly surprised by how much improvement was made in Season 2. By bringing together the main characters, delving deeper into villain storylines, and leaning heavily on the richly established world and narratives, the series was able to pick up the pace and keep me engaged.
