As a seasoned gamer with countless hours spent immersed in various fantasy worlds, I must admit that the Season 2 finale of Rings of Power left me spellbound! The epic showdown between Galadriel and Sauron was nothing short of spectacular, and it’s a testament to the dedication of the cast and crew that they managed to pull off such a complex scene.

Galadriel and Sauron didn’t share a big scene together in Season 2 of Rings of Power until the finale, and said scene couldn’t have had higher stakes. Charlie Vickers’ character was trying to get the nine rings, while Morfydd Clark’s elf worked to protect them and defeat Sauron. It was a scene that involved epic fight choreography and shape-shifting, and TopMob spoke to Vickers and the episode’s director Charlotte Brändström about the story behind filming it.

In my chat with Brändström, she spilled the beans about this scene requiring meticulous planning, aiming for an epic and extraordinary feel. To bring it to life, they encountered some tricky logistical hurdles – one being Vickers growing a beard and Morfydd Clark portraying the villainous character. Here’s the lowdown on how they managed to pull it off.

How Growing A Beard Presented A Logistical Challenge For Charlie Vickers And The Rings Of Power Team

At the beginning of Season 2, Sauron transformed into Annatar, a clean-shaven, elegant blonde elf, which was quite different from Halbrand’s rougher appearance with his long brown hair and beard. Given that he had to portray both characters in just a few days, it must have been quite demanding. Vickers shared with me that this was particularly difficult for him due to his slow facial hair growth.

The transformation aspect, such as the character switching from Halbrand to Annatar, is something I handled on a Monday morning. Since then, they allowed me a weekend to attempt growing a beard, but it was quite sparse. My facial hair is very patchy, and what did grow wasn’t sufficient, so they had to touch it up with color.

In my conversation with Brändström, she also highlighted the importance of the beard. It was necessary to allocate time within the schedule for this, allowing Vickers to better portray Halbrand rather than Annatar, as she put it.

To clarify, when Halbrand transforms into Sauron, the challenge lies in the seemingly casual detail of his beard stubble. However, this isn’t just a simple aspect; it becomes complex when he is clean-shaven. Therefore, these subtle differences needed to be carefully addressed and filmed separately on another day.

Ultimately, the version of Halbrand portrayed in the Season 2 finale had subtle differences compared to his Season 1 counterpart. Yet, these discrepancies proved intriguing, as Vickers pointed out, as they served a fascinating role.

It was like Halbrand, but it was slightly different. Like, his hair’s a bit curlier, and he’s not quite as stubbly, but it kind of works, because he looks like a more shiny memory version of Halbrand.

I truly appreciate this unique portrayal. It seems that Sauron, after being knocked down by Galadriel, is strategically attempting to deceive her, masquerading as someone she once trusted – Halbrand. This manipulation appears to be a defensive move on his part. Additionally, it’s fascinating that in this scene, Vickers plays both Annatar and Halbrand, with Sauron also assuming the roles of Galadriel and Celebrimbor, characters played by Clark and Charles Edwards respectively within the Rings of Power cast.

Charlie Vickers And Charlotte Brändström Open Up About Morfydd Clark Also Playing Sauron In The Scene

In the intense battle sequence, Sauron assumes different forms – Annatar, Halbrand, Galadriel, and Celebrimbor before reverting to Annatar again. Both the actor and director acknowledged the extensive planning involved in the scene and the lengthy time taken to film it, particularly because Morfydd Clark portrayed both her elf character and Vickers’ main antagonist at different instances. Charlotte Brändström explained further:

To reprise her role as Galadriel similar to how she was before, Morfydd had to significantly alter her performance. Instead of being gentle, she portrayed a harder version. In essence, she embodied Sauron and then purified herself. This required Morfydd to transform and adopt a new persona, essentially acting against the original character. This process is complex because it involves switching actors, making it quite time-consuming.

Vickers shared that it was quite an intricate task to manage, but it turned out to be a fantastic experience for him. He mentioned they filmed the scene over about two weeks, and he thoroughly enjoyed working with Morfydd again. Particularly, he found amusing her portrayal of his character.

Later, it was just as amusing observing Morfydd and Charles Edwards mimicking me while seated on some rocks.

Despite the intense and emotional moments between Galadriel and Celebrimbor, who had just confronted Sauron before being captured and killed by him, it was amusing for Vickers to observe. In essence, Vickers found himself enjoying watching his co-stars deliver their best Sauron performances, as he humorously commented on the scene.

Indeed, it felt distinctly personal to me when Mofydd offered their perspective on my performance. I found myself wondering, ‘Is that the way they saw it?’

In my gaming world, portraying a character alongside Clark was an absolute blast! I can only imagine how amusing it must have been for the cast and crew to see her bring my character to life in that crucial scene. What a unique twist to the filmmaking process!

In summary, the pivotal fight had a significant impact, culminating in Galadriel leaping from a precipice to escape Sauron. Now, the anticipation for Season 3 of Rings of Power builds, as I’m eager to explore the repercussions of this transformative event that was both thrilling to witness and captivating to produce.
