As a seasoned movie critic with a lifetime spent immersed in the rich tapestry of Middle-earth, I can confidently say that the final scenes of “Rings of Power” Season 2 have left an indelible mark on me. The emotional intensity and depth displayed by Morfydd Clark as Galadriel and Charlie Vickers as Sauron was nothing short of breathtaking.
For several months now, the second season of “The Rings of Power” has concluded on the 2024 television schedule, leaving behind some unforgettable scenes. One that particularly resonated with me was Sauron’s emotional response after killing Celebrimbor, and the intense battle between Galadriel and the evil entity that culminated in her leaping off a cliff to escape him. During my interview with Charlie Vickers and Morfydd Clark, I couldn’t help but ask about the climactic scene involving their characters, and the psychological intricacies of their confrontation left me utterly astounded.
Morfydd Clark Explains The Mentality And Meaning Behind Galadriel Jumping Off That Cliff
I initiated our discussion by inquiring about the pivotal scene during Galadriel and Sauron’s battle, focusing on Morfydd Clark’s character and how her actions symbolized her personal development. Instead of yielding to his influence or being consumed by self-doubt, the elf took a leap from a precipice, clutching her ring tightly, moving away from Sauron towards safety. This act was truly significant for her character, and the actress agreed, expressing that it indeed reflected growth, as she elaborated:
It seems she decided to cut ties with him and found it preferable to exist in Middle-earth, even if it meant being deceased, rather than living with him.

It’s clear that she made it through to the end of the season, much like in “Lord of the Rings.” Clark added an amusing tidbit during our conversation, emphasizing this point by mentioning that in “The Silmarillion,” elves were portrayed as being quite eccentric, leaping onto buildings and causing chaos. Thus, this poignant moment wasn’t just deep and emotional, but it also served as a delightful reference to the original source material – something that truly amazed me.
After that, Clark shared some insightful observations with me, pointing out the similarities between her recent actions and Elrond’s actions at the beginning of the season when he leapt from a waterfall to secure the rings from her. She expressed this by saying:
During our interaction, I didn’t give much thought to Elrond’s relation to it, but it’s accurate to say that she was somewhat influenced by him. Moreover, I’ve enjoyed portraying their dynamic, as it was through Elrond’s disapproval that she learned from her errors and endured them most profoundly, given her admiration for him.
As a movie enthusiast, I must say, that parallel was nothing short of profound and effectively drove home the notion that Galadriel had well and truly stepped out from under Sauron’s influence. Yet, when it came to deciphering Sauron’s thoughts in that instant, I, for one, couldn’t grasp that at all.
Charlie Vickers Told Me What Sauron Was Thinking When Galadriel Jumped Away From Him
In a playful manner, when I inquired from Charlie Vickers about Sauron’s reaction to Galadriel fleeing him and ordering him to mend himself, he compared it to her saying “heal yourself, you insolent one.” It was like a stinging rebuke, and one that took him aback initially, as the actor clarified, as it wasn’t immediately apparent to him at first.
I believe the phrase might have been too abstract for him to understand. Instead, I’d interpret it as: It doesn’t seem like he’s concerned with self-healing or therapy; rather, I sense an escape or evasion is more likely.
In this part, things became surprisingly intriguing. When I witnessed this scene, I didn’t expect Vickers’ remark would pass over Sauron in such a way. I assumed he would have heard it – perhaps choosing to ignore it – but heard it nonetheless. However, Vickers’ comment makes me wonder if Sauron’s character was so engrossed in what Galadriel was doing that he couldn’t fully grasp the situation; instead, he seemed preoccupied with her jumping away while continuing his explanation.
He’s convinced in that moment that she’s giving [him the ring] – he can’t see any alternative because he’s so arrogant and thinks he’s the man, and she’s giving him the ring, and he’s like, ‘You’re going to give it to me, you’re going to give it to me.’ And then she resists him and jumps off the cliff. It’s just like he could not fathom that was possible. So I think he’s dealing with that, and also he knows she’s not going to die.
It appears that Saruon was so certain he could win over Galadriel, her actions left him baffled – it’s astonishing! I’m eagerly anticipating how this will shape his perspective on her as we move into Rings of Power Season 3, and whether she can leverage this misconception to her benefit.
The constant struggle between these two characters is incredibly captivating, and understanding their perspectives only deepens the complexity of their narratives and actions. Indeed, their insights left me spellbound, and I can’t help but ponder them as this grand Lord of the Rings tale unfolds further.
