- Roadman is out now on Google Play
- This gritty multiplayer crime sim isn’t lacking in absurdity
- But the social issues are very much on full display
As a fan, I find myself frequently engaged in discussions about whether certain forms of entertainment glamorize criminal activities. Whether it’s the iconic Grand Theft Auto series, the 1980s hit Scarface, or contemporary social media platforms, there’s always the question: is it fun to be wicked? However, in Roadman, that perceived moral ambiguity is peeled back to expose a grim reality that might make you squirm with discomfort.
At first glance, Roadman appears to be a typical Grand Theft Auto-style game that drops you into the role of an aspiring criminal navigating the gritty streets of Anywhere, a nameless country. However, upon closer examination, it reveals itself to be more about illicit transactions in back alleys and raw violence, rather than flashy cars or glamour.
In the game Roadman, your character’s class, gender, and appearance significantly influence how non-player characters (NPCs) interact with you. This design element is meant to simulate and examine societal issues that contribute to and sustain crime. However, expect to encounter peculiar personalities and absurd narratives as you delve into this gritty urban landscape.
It’s bad being bad
Roadman makes a lot of very big promises, but at the moment, it seems to be gearing up for bigger things. Appearances may be deceiving, however, I think that the more stylised low-poly look of Roadman works better than trying to emulate more graphically dazzling crime simulators.
Concurrently, I believe there’s a requirement for additional explanation about how this social system operates, along with some extra observation period to witness player reactions, in order to determine if Roadman serves as the disruption that the system requires.
However, regardless of your choice, Roadman is simply one among numerous captivating titles launching this week. It’s quite possible that you, like myself, might feel a bit overwhelmed. Luckily, you can take the same approach and explore our weekly feature showcasing the top five new mobile games to check out this week to help you get started!
