Rob McElhenney Files to Legally Change Name to “Rob Mac”

Rob McElhenney has filed legal documents to change his name.

Reports say that the actor officially requested on Thursday for his last name to be changed to Mac, which means he will now be known as Robert (Rob) Mac, as per various news sources.

The actor from “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” has mentioned before that he plans to alter his name, as he finds it challenging for some people to pronounce correctly.

Recently, in an interview with Variety, he mentioned that as our company and storytelling are spreading globally and his name becomes more difficult for people to pronounce in different languages, he’s now preferring to be called Rob Mac.

McElhenney, along with Ryan Reynolds, owns part of the Wrexham AFC football club (that’s soccer for readers in the U.S.). They acquired the team back in 2020 and, aside from their ownership role, they are also executive producers on the FX docuseries titled “Welcome to Wrexham“, which chronicles the team’s journey. The series, which has won an Emmy, was recently renewed for a fifth season, and details about a spinoff show called “Necaxa” have been disclosed.

In 2023, Reynolds produced a musical tribute video for McElhenney’s birthday, featuring well-known personalities like Kaitlin Olson, who is not only McElhenney’s real-life spouse but also his “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” co-star. This video aimed to educate the audience on how to correctly pronounce McElhenney’s name.

Indeed, he’s known for his handsome visage, a face that seems familiar,” Reynolds sings. “People think they’ve seen him on hit TV shows. Yet, amidst all the praise and stardom, there’s one fact they overlook: pronouncing his name correctly.

The lyrics go on to explains that the name rhymes with “tackle penny.”

The tune repeated, ‘It’s McElhenney, It’s McElhenney,’ with numerous methods to botch and mispronounce it. But rest assured, it’s McElhenney, it’s McElhenney. Any uncertainty is now laid to rest. It’s McElhenney!”

“The song kept saying ‘It’s McElhenney, It’s McElhenney,’ with plenty of ways to butcher and mispronounce it. But don’t worry, it’s definitely McElhenney, it’s McElhenney. Any lingering doubt has been dispelled. It’s McElhenney!

Previously, Olson expressed that their two young sons were adjusting to the concept: “The children aren’t thrilled with it, as they identify strongly with their current surname. And I feel the same way, since I share the same name, legally.

The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to McElhenney’s reps for comment.
