Rob Reiner Teases New 'Spinal Tap 2' Details

As a seasoned cinephile who’s had the pleasure of witnessing the evolution of comedy from the golden age to the digital era, I can confidently say that the announcement of Spinal Tap II has sent ripples of excitement through the cinematic universe. Having grown up in the 80s when This Is Spinal Tap first graced our screens, I vividly remember the confusion and amusement as I pondered whether this was a real band or a brilliant mockumentary.

In a fresh conversation with Empire magazine, director Rob Reiner has shared intriguing news about the upcoming Spinal Tap II, the sequel to his 1984 hit movie, This Is Spinal Tap. He’s disclosed some fascinating insights into what the characters – Nigel Tufnel (played by Christopher Guest), David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean), and Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer) – have been engaging in since the debut of the original film.

Reiner stated:

Nigel operates a business that sells cheese and guitars… David composes music for a true-crime podcast titled ‘The Trouble with Murder’. Meanwhile, Derek manages a museum dedicated to glue. He also penned a symphony named ‘Hell Toupée’, which humorously depicts the devil wearing a wig.

As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but share some exciting news about the upcoming film. Reiner has assured us that along with the fun, we’ll also get to hear some fresh Spinal Tap tunes. One of these songs is titled “Rockin’ In The Urn,” which is a heartfelt dedication by Derek Smalls to the idea that even after he’s gone, he’ll still be rocking on stage. That’s what Reiner revealed about it!

40 years following “This Is Spinal Tap,” a sequel is in the works, featuring Rob Reiner returning to direct, alongside Christopher Guest, Harry Shearer, and Michael McKean who will be back as the main cast. Additionally, Rob Reiner will reprise his role as documentarian Marty DiBergi, with Fran Drescher also returning as Bobbi Flekman.

Alongside the main characters, many popular musicians will also make special appearances as themselves. Confirmed stars include Elton John, Paul McCartney, Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood, Questlove, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, and Metallica co-founder Lars Ulrich. Additionally, John Michael Higgins – a frequent collaborator of Christopher Guest – will be joining them, having appeared in both “Best in Show” and “A Mighty Wind”.

Spinal Tap II is expected to be released sometime in early 2025.

The film “This Is Spinal Tap” is often hailed as one of the greatest mockumentary movies ever produced, and is known for being incredibly funny. This film was director Rob Reiner’s first effort, and it paved the way for his successful career in Hollywood, leading him to direct films such as “Stand By Me,” “When Harry Met Sally,” and “Misery,” among others.

Additionally, the movie catapulted Guest, Shearer, and McKean to stardom since they were virtually unrecognized prior; in fact, numerous viewers believed that This Is Spinal Tap was a true-to-life documentary about an authentic band.

As Reiner told Newsweek in 2009:

Initially, when ‘Spinal Tap’ debuted, many people believed it was an actual musical group. The common response was, “Why produce a film about a band nobody knows?” However, its humor went over most people’s heads because it was incredibly realistic and relatable.

As a cinephile, I can’t help but appreciate the authenticity that shines through in this movie because the director, Reiner, drew inspiration from real-life events for many scenes. For instance, remember when the band was lost backstage in a stadium, trying to find the stage entrance? Believe it or not, something very similar happened to Tom Petty and his band, the Heartbreakers – a tidbit Reiner himself revealed!
