As a passionate gamer and avid Marvel fan, I can’t express enough how taken aback I was when I heard the news that Robert Downey Jr. would be reprising his role as Doom in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I mean, seriously?! This came out of nowhere. I couldn’t help but exclaim, “What is even going on here? I’m completely confused!” wrote u/ILikeClefairy in a thread discussing this surprising announcement on Reddit. And I couldn’t agree more with u/MegaClone18 who added, “Nobody saw that coming.” In fact, if anyone claims they did, they’re most definitely fibbing.
Although Downey is cherished for his portrayal of Tony Stark, and his iconic role has left a significant mark on the MCU, some fans are not thrilled about his potential return as a villain, particularly one who hasn’t been introduced yet. As one Redditor put it, “I’m not a fan if I’m being honest. Seems like an easy way out to me.” Instead, they suggested that if Disney were to recast a Marvel actor for the role of Doom, they would have preferred Mads Mikkelsen, who previously played the antagonist Kaecilius in “Doctor Strange” (2016). The sentiment was widely shared on social media.
