Robert Englund Had to Defend Freddy Krueger's Iconic Hat to Wes Craven: 'It Was Kind of Silly'

As a die-hard fan of both Indiana Jones and Freddy Krueger, I must say that these two iconic characters have left indelible marks on my childhood and continue to captivate me even today. While they may seem like polar opposites, their shared appreciation for the timeless fedora hat adds a delightful layer of connection between them.

Two iconic movie characters, Indiana Jones (portrayed by Harrison Ford) and Freddy Krueger (played by Robert Englund), are both widely recognized – and there’s more than just their fame that connects them. While their styles might be polar opposites, they both sport a distinctive accessory as part of their signature looks: a fedora hat. However, despite these shared elements, it would be difficult to mistake one character for the other. In a recent interview with PEOPLE, Englund explained how he managed to keep Freddy’s iconic headwear in A Nightmare on Elm Street intact, even against potential changes from creators Wes Craven and producer Bob Shaye.

They attempted to switch my hat, briefly putting a paperboy hat on me and making me feel like I was auditioning for a Newsies role. It seemed rather absurd. However, I stood by the fedora, as it was part of the original plan, an idea by Wes. Yet, they grew anxious at the last minute.

There was a hint of panic among them… I guess they had this notion that I resembled Indiana Jones somehow. But I quickly reassured them, ‘Don’t mistake me for Indiana Jones, nobody will!’

According to Englund, Freddy’s choice of a fedora wasn’t made on a whim (it wasn’t like the sudden appearance of a Michael Myers mask). Instead, the fedora was deliberately included in Craven’s script, as he vividly remembered being frightened as a child by a drunk man wearing a fedora hat. Similarly, the name Fred Krueger wasn’t chosen at random; it was the name of Craven’s childhood tormentor.

Will Robert Englund Ever Return as Horror Icon Freddy Krueger?

During the interview, Englund reminisced about the complete appearance of Freddy Krueger, comprising a shabby, dirty sweater, a right-gloved hand made of metal claws and leather, worn-out trousers, and a face marred by burns.

Recently, I recall staring at a small, low-quality mirror you’d find in a cheap store – not exactly a flattering image. However, one of those mirrors was hung up, and when I looked into it, an idea sparked. Under the bright overhead light, once I put on the hat and glove, I could see my shadow. In that shadow, I noticed a silhouette resembling Freddy Krueger, and I thought to myself, ‘Eureka! This is something I can develop further. This is an opportunity I can utilize.’

2022 marks the 40th anniversary since the debut of “A Nightmare on Elm Street”. Legendary actor Robert Englund, who embodied the character for decades, has been touring to celebrate the 4K Ultra High Definition (UHD) re-release of the movie. The iconic Freddy Krueger is undoubtedly one of horror’s most beloved antagonists, with Englund being inextricably linked to the character. While fans might hope for Englund to return as Freddy, he has expressed that he feels he no longer has the spark for the role. However, he is open to providing voice-overs for a top-tier, animated version instead. Even though we won’t see Englund in Freddy’s striped sweater and fedora again, many “A Nightmare on Elm Street” films can be streamed on Max.
