As a lifelong fan of action-packed adventure stories and a proud Latina woman who grew up admiring strong female characters, I couldn’t be more thrilled about CBS Studios’ gender-swapped adaptation of Zorro! The idea of a young Latina woman taking up the mantle of this iconic masked vigilante to fight against injustice and stand up for her community resonates deeply with me.
CBS Studios has officially brought back a modern take on the timeless character Zorro, where the gender roles have been reversed. This is actually the third version of the project that’s currently being developed by director Robert Rodriguez, known for his work on “Spy Kids”, and co-writers Rebecca Rodriguez and John Hlavin.
Back in 2020, as a die-hard movie enthusiast, I first heard whispers about a fresh take on the classic character Zorro, with the concept of a gender-swapped series floating around NBC. The brilliant mind behind the small screen, Alfredo Barrios Jr., was the one who penned the initial script. However, the baton was passed to The CW in 2022, and they unfortunately decided to shelve the project a year later. Now, Deadline reports that the dynamic Rodriguez siblings are preparing to breathe new life into the tale for CBS, crafting an original script featuring a young Latina woman. This modern adaptation tells the story of a woman who uncovers her late father’s secret identity as the legendary masked hero Zorro. In a bid to protect the citizens of Austin, Texas from oppression by the rich and powerful, she decides to don the mask and continue her father’s crusade.
It’s not just CBS considering a modern revival of Zorro on screen; Disney+ is working on a new TV series for the character, produced by Wilmer Valderrama from “That ’70s Show.” This series will blend the original Zorro’s early 20th-century atmosphere with contemporary themes. Additionally, Alex Rivera, director of “Sleep Dealer,” is planning to write and direct “Zorro 2.0,” a futuristic reboot where Zorro becomes a hacker battling a tech-driven conspiracy.

Today, it seems that reimaginings and adaptations of Zorro are particularly trendy – even though past attempts, such as the one by CBS, have not always been successful. However, this enduring appeal could be attributed to Zorro’s longstanding allure, which dates back to his initial appearance in 1919 pulp fiction novels. Perhaps more than ever before, audiences are drawn to Zorro’s quest for vigilante justice.
In these challenging times filled with political turmoil, it seems that people crave uplifting tales where champions arise to defend their causes. While CBS’s rendition of Zorro has faced numerous setbacks, casting a shadow over its potential realization, other studios are eagerly working on reviving this cherished figure, guaranteeing that the beloved vigilante will soon grace our screens once more.
