The iconic 1980s film, “RoboCop,” stands as one of the unforgettable masterpieces in sci-fi cinema. Its success seems to have been a unique blend of factors that made duplicating it a near challenge. Regrettably, the sequels and subsequent attempts at a “RoboCop” remake fell short of capturing the original’s magic. However, given Hollywood’s tendency to revisit popular concepts, perhaps they should consider reaching out to Peter Weller, the original star of the film, in future endeavors.
As a huge fan, I can’t help but share my excitement about Peter Weller’s potential return to the RoboCop franchise at 77 years old! When TMZ asked him point-blank if he’d be up for reprising his role as Murphy in a reboot, Weller didn’t hesitate. He’d do it, provided the pay is right and he doesn’t have to jet off to a place he’s not keen on. In his own words…
I’d be willing to take on any project if the script is strong and the compensation is satisfactory. As Robert Mitchum put it, “I don’t work at night,” and I’m not interested in filming in North Korea. However, if the offer is appealing, I’ll definitely consider it.
Sometimes, fans might find it hard to separate the beloved characters from their actors, as they are merely professionals carrying out their roles. However, Weller would only accept a project if the script was solid enough, so money alone won’t entice him. Yet, if a project meets all his requirements, why wouldn’t he take part in it?
After the unsuccessful reboot of the classic RoboCop, there was a short-lived effort to resurrect the original series. A film titled RoboCop Returns, penned by Ed Neumeier, the writer of the initial movie, was proposed. This new installment would have followed a similar pattern as the recent Halloween trilogy, disregarding all other sequels and treating them as non-canon. There was an intention to bring back Weller, but he declined, indicating that he’s selective about the movies he appears in.
It’s worth considering the resurgence of the video game “RoboCop: Rogue City”, a continuation of the original series featuring the voice of Weller as RoboCop. The game’s success might suggest that reviving this character could be a viable idea.
A plausible option might involve a continuation or spin-off of the initial RoboCop series, set within the same universe, where we see Alex Murphy, played by Weller, reprise his role from the original film. This concept certainly sparks some intriguing thoughts. Does RoboCop grow older?
As a passionate cinephile, pondering over the intriguing character from one of my favorite films, it strikes me: on the outside, he’s predominantly mechanical, yet endowed with biological aspects. If these human elements begin to wear down due to aging, they can’t be swapped out like his mechanical counterparts. Could this gradual decay lead him to shed more of his humanity and transform into something more machine-like? The more I muse upon it, the stronger the idea resonates within me. Perhaps it’s time to reach out to Peter Weller and see if he’d be willing to reprise his iconic role in exploring this fascinating concept further.
