As a dedicated Marvel fan, I can’t help but be moved by the small yet profound detail in Rocket Raccoon’s costume in “Avengers: Endgame.” The red-and-blue ensemble with Star-Lord’s maroon scarf around his neck is more than just an accessory; it’s a poignant tribute to their bond and the memories they shared as a team.
After the devastating events of “Avengers: Infinity War,” I, as a fan, find myself mourning the loss of most Marvel Cinematic Universe heroes and half of all life in the universe. Dust to dust they became at Thanos’ (Josh Brolin) hands, leaving us with a universe filled with sorrow. The Avengers are now fragmented, Wakanda is bereft of its monarch, and the Guardians of the Galaxy are barely holding on. Amongst this wreckage, only Nebula (Karen Gillan) and Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper) remain alive. Rocket keeps their spirits alive with a poignant tribute in his costume.
Following the five-year leap at the beginning of “Avengers: Endgame,” several characters underwent changes, from updated superhero costumes to fresh hairstyles. For instance, Rocket is now donning a red-and-blue getup with a maroon scarf draped around his neck (as observed by Redditor u/WolfBrigadeII). This isn’t merely an addition to enhance his appearance; it seems to be the same scarf Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), wore in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.”
The notion that Rocket donning Quill’s scarf as a token of respect isn’t sorrowful enough for Marvel Cinematic Universe fans, and there has been much discourse over the depth of this homage.
There are layers to Rocket’s choice to wear Star-Lord’s scarf
In the aftermath of the Guardians of the Galaxy being momentarily disbanded in “Avengers: Endgame,” Rocket’s decision to wear Star-Lord’s scarf holds deeper significance than meets the eye. Primarily, it symbolizes the remarkable character development that Rocket has undergone throughout the series.
User u/fanchiuho brings attention to the significance of Quill’s connection with Rocket in their comment regarding the scarf. They detail how Quill holds a special place in Rocket’s heart, as evidenced by their shared humor, participation in dangerous activities together, support through personal issues, and proximity to baby Groot. Furthermore, Rocket has adopted some of Quill’s mannerisms and musical preferences. The scarf serves as a deeper symbol of their bond since Rocket’s heightened senses allow him to detect Star-Lord’s scent through it, emphasizing that a piece of his cherished friend remains with him.
I’m thrilled that Rocket gets to be with his Guardians companions once more – excluding Gamora, played by the $2 billion-grossing Zoe Saldaña – in “Avengers: Endgame.” This reunion allows him the precious opportunity to show them directly how deeply he cares for them.
