As a gamer who’s been around since the golden days of gaming, I’ve seen studios rise and fall, but Rocksteady’s tale is one that tugs at my heartstrings. Their Batman: Arkham trilogy was nothing short of legendary, setting the bar for superhero games higher than the Bat-Signal in the Gotham sky.
Story Highlights
- Rocksteady Studios is the talented creator of the Batman: Arkham franchise, which is now in shambles.
- After the failure of Suicide Squad, its latest release, the dev could be heading back to Batman.
- The rumor comes from a trustworthy insider who recently shared a pertinent post on X.
A well-respected figure within the industry, @Shpeshal_Nick, has shared on X that Rocksteady is currently developing a Batman game. This comes after the lackluster performance of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, an online shooter which bears no semblance to the Arkham series’ esteemed legacy. This assertion aligns with a job listing unearthed by eXputer last month, suggesting that Rocksteady is secretly working on a new project.
It’s worth mentioning that the rumor cites a different project than Batman: Arkham Shadows, the Meta Quest 3 exclusive that Oculus Studios unveiled earlier this year in May. We currently have no information to share pertaining to what Nick has heard, so do take it with a grain of salt. If it’s true, however, I know a ton of people are going to be over the moon.
The downfall of Rocksteady Studios, renowned for their work on the Batman: Arkham series, represents one of the saddest tales in video game development history. Although they are still admired today, the circumstances have significantly changed, and their most recent project underscores the need for a reboot within the gaming industry as a whole.
Fans Remain Fearful For A New Batman Game Even If It Does Come Out
After producing a powerhouse trilogy of superhero games, Rocksteady Studios has undergone significant changes, not just symbolically. The original founders of the company, Sefton Hill and Jamie Walker, have since left Rocksteady, which they established in 2004. They have since founded a new studio called Hundred Star, currently collaborating exclusively with Xbox Game Studios.
Fans and followers of the franchise continue to be anxious about a possible Batman game, given the company’s firm decision to shift its major intellectual properties towards a live service format. Here’s to hoping for better developments in the future, but this move from WB certainly doesn’t seem promising.
