As a longtime Star Wars devotee with memories of watching the original trilogy in the theater as a child, I must say that Felicity Jones’ desire to return to the galaxy far, far away fills me with excitement. Jyn Erso’s unfinished business is indeed intriguing, and if executed correctly, could provide an enthralling chapter in the Star Wars saga.
In a nod to the Star Wars galaxy, actress Felicity Jones, who played the role of Jyn Erso in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, has expressed interest in revisiting this universe. The film, directed by Gareth Edwards, follows Jyn Erso, a Galactic Empire captive liberated by the Rebel Alliance, on her mission to retrieve the Death Star plans. Alongside Jones, the movie introduced Cassian Andor, portrayed by Gabriel Luna, a morally ambiguous spy who later starred in his own spin-off series. Despite Rogue One’s conclusive ending for its characters, Jones remains hopeful about potentially reprising her role.
Discussing her upcoming movie “The Brutalist” with Variety, Felicity Jones expressed her desire to revisit a galaxy far, far away in another Star Wars installment. “There’s some business left undone there,” she started. While she didn’t provide specifics on how Jyn Erso might reappear in the Star Wars saga after “Rogue One”, Jones indicated that as long as the story is compelling, she’s open to reprising her role. In her own words: “As long as the tale is well-crafted, I’m always ready to go back.
“I think in the right circumstance if you put Jyn in the right story, then why not?”
It’s not a new wish from Felicity Jones that she reappear in the Star Wars universe; in fact, as far back as 2020, Jones proposed the idea of resurrecting Jyn Erso. The finale of Rogue One showed Jyn, Cassian, and their fellow Rogue One team members being wiped out on the Empire’s Scarif base. While Cassian Andor has reappeared in a prequel format, Jones expressed a desire for Jyn Erso to make a comeback in a story that takes place after Rogue One. She stated:
In other words, I’ve been arguing that reincarnation could indeed occur within the Star Wars universe. Therefore, it seems to me that Jyn Erso has some remaining tasks or unresolved matters.
What’s Next for ‘Star Wars’?
At this point, the universe of Star Wars seems a bit uncertain. What was once an iconic science fiction series now appears as just another addition to the vast ocean of streaming programs. The most recent film, Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker, didn’t seem to win over many fans. However, on the small screen, Star Wars has found a new lease on life through live-action TV shows like The Mandalorian and Andor, which have been quite successful. Unfortunately, spin-offs such as The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and The Acolyte didn’t resonate with audiences in the same way that Star Wars used to.
Disney continues to develop the Star Wars intellectual property, with a fresh cinematic trilogy underway. Simon Kinberg is in charge of this new trilogy, having previously directed and produced movies such as X-Men: Days of Future Past and Logan, but also films like The New Mutants and the 2015 reboot of Fantastic Four that didn’t fare well. As for the plot details, they remain undisclosed at this time.
As a movie enthusiast, I can tell you that there are some exciting standalone Star Wars films on the horizon. The much-talked-about Rey Skywalker movie, which was previously being penned by Steven Knight from Peaky Blinders, has recently lost its screenwriter. However, it’s still reportedly moving forward. On a positive note, the director of Logan, James Mangold, is now helming a fresh Star Wars project. Moreover, Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian and Grogu just added another big-name actor to its cast. With these developments, could we possibly be seeing a resurgence for this beloved franchise?
