Roman Polanski Lawsuit Alleging Director Raped Minor in 1973 Has Been Settled

As a gamer with a keen interest in both cinema and justice, I find myself at a crossroads when it comes to Roman Polanski. His artistic accomplishments are undeniable, but his actions off-screen have cast a long and dark shadow over his career.

91-year-old film director Roman Polanski will not be facing trial for the accusations of sexually assaulting a minor in 1973, as confirmed by reports from Agence France-Presse (AFP), following the resolution of the case through a settlement with his U.S. lawyer.

The filmmaker behind “The Pianist” and “The Palace” departed the United States many years ago following an admission of statutory rape against a 13-year-old girl in a plea bargain struck in 1977. After spending 42 days in prison, he decided to leave the country when it seemed that a judge was reconsidering his release from custody.

Last year, a lawsuit against Polanski was submitted and was scheduled for trial at a civil court in Los Angeles in August 2025. However, due to a settlement reached between the parties, the case has been withdrawn. The attorney reportedly stated that the case was “amicably resolved over the summer to both parties’ satisfaction” and has since been officially dropped.

Gloria Allred, the attorney representing the plaintiff, told AFP that “both parties were content with the arrangement and reached a deal regarding the disputes.

A mystery plaintiff has brought forth a legal claim in Los Angeles Superior Court, aiming for undisclosed compensation, alleging that Roman Polanski sexually assaulted a minor in 1973 following the provision of alcohol. This lawsuit was submitted right before the expiration of a California law permitting extended time to file suits against individuals accused of sexual misconduct.

Polanski, a best director Oscar winner for The Pianist (2002), has always denied wrongdoing.
