Ron Perlman Is Proudest of a Movie Nobody's Heard Of

As a fervent admirer of Ron Perlman‘s illustrious career, I find myself consistently amazed by his diverse roles and the sheer depth of his talent. However, when I recently read about his pride for a film that barely anyone has seen – “Asher” – my curiosity was piqued. In an industry where recognition often comes from blockbuster success, it’s refreshing to see an actor take pride in a project that flew under the radar but meant so much to him personally.

Ron Perlman boasts an exceptional acting career, starting with an Oscar-winning film (Quest for Fire) directed by a renowned filmmaker; later in that decade, he earned a Golden Globe for the TV series Beauty and the Beast. He’s appeared in blockbuster franchise movies like Star Trek, Blade, Hellboy, Alien, as well as international art films such as The City of Lost Children, Sergio and Sergei. His resume also includes indie horror films like Cronos, The Last Winter, I Sell the Dead, and numerous collaborations with filmmaker Guillermo del Toro. However, during an interview with MovieWeb about his new film with Liam Neeson, Absolution, Perlman shared an unexpected revelation about the movie he’s most proud of in his career – a film that’s scarcely seen by many.

For approximately five to six years, I ran a production company named Wing and a Prayer Pictures, during which time I produced around nine films, as Perlman shared.

The initial project we pinpointed was titled “Asher,” which surprisingly turned out to be our latest production. This film, unfortunately, was the one that brought our company to an end. It’s something that wasn’t foreseen, but I can attest to the effort it took to bring it to life, how close we came to realizing my vision when I first read the script, and why it initially caught my interest. If you have a moment, I believe it’s available on Amazon Prime. It goes by the name Asher.

Perlman added, “It appears you might be among a rare few to notice this if you do, but I’m secretly quite proud of us. We managed to roll that large stone uphill, and remarkably, it resembled the way I had envisioned it in my mind.

In addition to Asher, the film production company Wing and a Prayer Pictures (led by Ron Perlman) created films such as To Dust, Pottersville, Sergio & Sergei, Escape of Prisoner 614, All Nighter, All I See Is You, and Bone in the Throat. Although the production company is no longer operational, these movies continue to exist, forming an eclectic mix. They feature a range of talented actors like Michael Shannon, J.K. Simmons, Emile Hirsch, Matthew Broderick, Blake Lively, Tom Wilkinson, Vanessa Kirby, Christina Hendricks, Ian McShane, Judy Greer, Richard Dreyfuss, Jacqueline Bisset, and many others.

Ron Perlman’s ‘Asher’ Stands Out Among Hitman Thrillers

In this rephrased version, the character named Asher trails an ex-Mossad operative turned hitman who is nearing the end of his deadly career. While executing a job that goes awry, he encounters a woman and finds himself falling for her – much like in John Woo’s “The Killer.” The consequences of this romantic entanglement will put both their lives at risk. As the man advances in age, he must confront and eliminate his inner assassin, dismantle the life he has built, and that could potentially take his life. Critic Richard Roeper wrote a review for The Chicago Sun-Times about the film:

This film shines brightly due to exceptional acting by Ron Perlman and the supporting cast, a smart and insightful screenplay by Jay Zaretsky, and skillful direction by Michael Caton-Jones. At the heart of it all is the towering elegance of Ron Perlman as a ruthlessly efficient assassin who unexpectedly finds a flicker of warmth within himself, despite being at an age where he should have retired, if such a thing were possible for someone like him.

Although Asher might be the film he’s most proud of, it’s important to note that Perlman has been involved in numerous films and series. He shared with us that if he had only done Asher and nothing else, he would have already made significant strides in his career. However, the fact that there were so many characters he played, like the hunchback in The Name of the Rose and the Beast in the first-ever prime-time fantasy show on CBS during Friday nights at 8 pm, was a surreal and transformative experience for him.

You have the option to either rent or purchase the movie titled “Asher” across various digital platforms such as Apple TV, Fandango Now, and Amazon Prime Video. Here’s the link to access it on Prime Video.
