- Run the Realm is a new fantasy-themed fitness app
- You’ll play a survivor of an otherworldly attack who’s only option is to run
- Play as a knight, mage or thief as you level up by jogging, running and cycling
It appears that one of the significant tendencies in fitness apps over the last few years has been to turn everything into a game. Given that most people, except perhaps the most avid fitness enthusiasts, find exercise rather uninteresting, it’s no surprise that developers are creating new ways to make your morning jog more engaging. The latest offering aiming to boost excitement for your workout is Run the Realm, which transforms your fitness objectives into a fantastical realm!
Recently made available on Google Play and Apple’s App Store again, Run the Realm offers an unconventional twist on fitness tracking. Instead of the usual steps-counting routine, you assume the role of a powerful fantasy warrior, reminiscent of Dungeons & Dragons. Your daily exercise goals serve as your means to progress the storyline and accomplish quests. Whether you choose cycling, jogging, or simply walking, each step brings you closer to conquering your realm!
In addition, you’ll accumulate points to enhance the skills of your chosen character class, whether it be a mage, knight, or thief. Since an otherworldly attack has devastated your city and left you with a disgraced knight as your sole ally, your course of action becomes one of either fleeing (or putting in the work, if you prefer).
Get fit fast
The game Realm offers an array of captivating elements, including a bardic radio for listening and a narration system that advances the quest while you’re playing your own music selection. However, it shares some characteristics with recent releases that I find less appealing, such as noticeable AI-generated artwork which can appear somewhat blurry upon closer examination.
Indeed, a fitness app like Run the Realm isn’t primarily meant to showcase attractive images. Rather, if it manages to keep you engaged with an interesting narrative while simultaneously promoting physical fitness, then it has successfully met its objectives.
