As a gamer, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be attending the Sheffield DocFest this year, where Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato, the masterminds behind World of Wonder (WOW), will grace us as guests of honor. These legends are known for hit shows like RuPaul’s Drag Race, and we’ll get to see several screenings of their films and TV series! It’s going to be an amazing event!
At the U.K. festival dedicated to them, a special sneak peek of the initial episode of HBO’s upcoming show Murder in Glitterball City, directed by the duo, will be showcased. Additionally, the event will host a discussion titled “Ronan Farrow in Conversation: From Podcast to Screen.” During this session, Ronan Farrow, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, author, and broadcaster, will virtually join his longtime collaborators Bailey and Barbato for an exclusive and insightful conversation about turning podcasts into TV series.
Moreover, this pair plans to delve into their professional journey spanning past, present, and future during a “Chat Session,” and they will reunite with Adam Buxton and Joe Cornish for a retrospective of “The Adam and Joe Show‘s” inception. The Sheffield festival will also debut the U.K. version of “Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror” directed by Linus O’Brien, a project they executive produced.
Sheffield DocFest organizers acknowledged the pioneering work of Bailey and Barbato, whose documentaries and series provide a platform for underrepresented voices. This body of work encompasses Emmy-winning productions like RuPaul’s Drag Race, as well as award-winning documenatries such as Party Monster, Inside Deep Throat, and The Eyes of Tammy Faye. Additionally, they are the creators behind critically acclaimed films. To add to their impressive portfolio, they launched WOW Presents Plus, a streaming platform accessible to audiences worldwide.
Bailey and Barbato expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to curate the program at Sheffield DocFest, noting that the current climate is far from “business as usual.” With the boom in documentary and unscripted funding seemingly gone, and diversity and freedom of expression under threat, they view this as an opening for innovative models, fresh genres, and unique storytelling approaches. Their pioneering work, spanning decades, has consistently predicted what would become mainstream culture, earning them 33 Emmys and inspiring Oscar-winning performances.
In summary, they found that things will be ‘unusual in business,’ and they are eager to discover what lies ahead with a mix of optimism, imagination, and curiosity.
Raul Niño Zambrano, the creative director of Sheffield DocFest, stated: “In a period where tales about the LGBTQ+ community encounter increasing opposition, Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato continue to be brave pioneers. They skillfully amplify the voices of this community on both large and small screens, demonstrating remarkable adaptability to new mediums, genuine appreciation for fanbases, and a commitment to fostering queer talent. Their efforts have significantly impacted culture by attracting diverse audiences to digital platforms, movie theaters, and audio environments. Their achievements serve as evidence that authenticity, innovation, and community can flourish – even in challenging environments.
The 32nd edition of the Sheffield DocFest takes place June 18-23.
