As a movie critic with over three decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the news of the Rush Hour trilogy hitting free streaming this December is like finding a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow for action movie enthusiasts! The dynamic duo of Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker first graced our screens in 1998 with the original Rush Hour, introducing us to the mismatched pair of Lee and Carter.
Excitement abounds for enthusiasts of action movies! Fans of martial arts action and humorous banter between and can celebrate early as Christmas, because starting this December, the entire Rush Hour trilogy will be available to stream for free. Jackie Chan, the renowned action movie star, and Chris Tucker, the popular stand-up comedian, teamed up nearly three decades ago in the first Rush Hour, where they introduced their characters – Chan as Hong Kong cop Lee, partnered with Tucker’s brash LAPD Detective James Carter. In this film, the mismatched duo must collaborate to save a Chinese diplomat’s kidnapped daughter.
Led by director Brett Ratner, who has been largely shunned following numerous sexual assault allegations and the severance of ties with several major studios, the original “Rush Hour” films will be available for free streaming (with advertisements) starting from December 1st. The first movie received favorable responses from both critics and audiences, who were equally captivated by the leads’ chemistry and the film’s blend of comedy and martial arts action.
In 2001, a follow-up film named “Rush Hour 2” was unveiled, continuing immediately from where the initial movie ended. This second installment shifted the duo of buddy cops to Hong Kong, where their planned relaxation got disrupted when an explosion occurred at the American embassy. Despite not receiving as much praise from critics, the electrifying connection between the leading actors remains evident.
Will We Ever See ‘Rush Hour 4’?
Regrettably, the Rush Hour franchise saw a decline in positive reception, with 2007’s Rush Hour 3 receiving a score of only 17% on Rotten Tomatoes. Starring Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker once more, this third installment finds the duo in Paris, dodging Chinese gangsters and dealing with Lee’s old friend, portrayed by Hiroyuki Sanada from John Wick: Chapter 4 and Shogun. In their efforts to solve the attempt on the Chinese Ambassador to the U.S.’s life, they must stay one step ahead. Despite the series’ decreasing popularity, fans of action-comedy will find enjoyment in this cherished trilogy.
Fans are still anticipating news about the upcoming “Rush Hour 4,” with Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker confirming its production. However, recent reports suggest that the project may be delayed due to studio concerns over working with Brett Ratner again, who was initially involved in the project but has been absent from Hollywood since facing sexual misconduct allegations in 2017. Let’s hope they can find a way to move forward without Ratner and bring Chan and Tucker back for another action-packed adventure soon.
