Russell Crowe, who demonstrated his skill in the Colosseum for Ridley Scott’s Gladiator, is now grooming a fresh contender for the MMA octagon in the upcoming mixed martial arts action film, titled Beast in Me. Movies based on Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) have had varying success. The Never Back Down and Undisputed series (to an extent that the latter can be considered an MMA series), have garnered mixed reactions from both audiences and critics, while Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton’s Warrior is widely regarded as the best of its kind. With the acting prowess of Russell Crowe and the rest of the star-studded cast, Beast in Me has a strong chance of claiming the top spot.
Thanks to Deadline, we get a sneak peek at Crowe and Daniel MacPherson from Foundation starrer, Beast in Me, joined by an impressive cast. Besides them, the movie features Luke Hemsworth, Mojean Aria, Kelly Gale, George Burgess, Bren Foster, Saphira Moran, and Australian newcomer Amy Shark. Unlike many MMA films with exaggerated tournaments or underground fight clubs, Beast in Me adopts a more authentic approach. The film’s action takes place within ONE Championship, the UFC’s main rival organization.
In this movie, MacPherson portrays Patton James, a former mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter who has retired, but finds himself back in the ring due to severe financial hardships affecting his family. Crowe is cast as the seasoned coach helping James prepare for the fight. The film, as Deadline puts it, revolves around this comeback story.
In Beast In Me, the character Patton James, played by MacPherson, gives up his ambition for mixed martial arts and instead focuses on supporting his wife Luciana and their son. When his brother Malon gets severely injured and is in debt to underworld figures, Patton decides to seek revenge for him by participating in a ONE Championship fight, with the guidance of experienced coach Sammy.
‘Beast in Me’ Is a True Martial Arts Film
The movie titled “Beast in Me” is being helmed by Tyler Atkins, with a screenplay penned jointly by Crowe and David Frigerio. Notably, Frigerio was also involved in the script for the 2024 film “Land of Bad“. Upon the announcement, Frigerio indicated that “Beast in Me” skillfully combines intense multidisciplinary fights with a compelling narrative that focuses on its characters. In essence, he described it as a “genuine martial arts film with the hero’s journey at its core.” Characters are portrayed subtly to deliver emotional depth, while exhilarating fight scenes provide dynamic action, promising to captivate and entertain audiences globally.
Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) was developed to determine which martial art style is superior, and since it’s a highly realistic combat sport, its intricacies often get overlooked in movie adaptations due to the need for safe performances by stunt artists. However, producer John Schwarz claims that the film Beast in Me will hold its own in a full five-round championship match and accurately portray the essence of MMA. He stated:
To make our movie relatable to sports fans, we’ve designed it based on real-life sports experiences. Our climactic scene was shot in Thailand at a genuine ONE Championship fight setting with more than 10,000 spectators. Our actors have put in countless hours of training to deliver stunning performances that capture the intense, raw energy and emotion of MMA fights. We’re thrilled for audiences to experience this on the big screen.
Beast in Me does not yet have a release date.
