For the upcoming season of “Doctor Who”, there seems to be an increased sense of importance due to whispers about the show potentially ending if Season 2 on Disney+ fails to meet expectations. Despite the BBC addressing cancellation speculations, they’ve yet to confirm whether star Ncuti Gatwa will continue as The Doctor. Furthermore, there were suggestions that Russell T. Davies might be leaving his role as showrunner following recent statements, but he has clarified this point directly with TopMob.
I recently had the privilege of speaking with Russell T. Davies prior to the U.S. premiere of Doctor Who on Disney+. During our conversation, he addressed the speculation about his departure from the show, sparked by comments made on David Tennant’s podcast. Davies clarified that while there are discussions taking place regarding a potential successor when he eventually steps down again, these conversations aren’t as significant as some fans might have assumed. According to Davies himself, these “discussions” don’t necessarily mean he is planning to leave soon.
To put it straightforwardly, the topic isn’t up for debate; it’s a common topic of conversation among us, including myself and David [Tennant], on our podcast. This discussion started even before my arrival, centering around who would take on this next role. There are no specific details, names, or individuals involved yet. I’m thrilled with how things have turned out so far, and I hope we can continue creating more. Wishing us luck!
According to the showrunner himself, Russell T. Davies may come back for another season of Doctor Who if Disney+ and BBC decide to continue it. While I can’t help but feel a bit apprehensive since nothing is certain yet, it’s comforting to know that he seems eager to return and there doesn’t appear to be any talk about bringing someone else on board instead.

In the forthcoming season, it seems that Doctor Who aims to further develop its overarching narrative known as the Pantheon arc. Additionally, intriguing guest stars such as Alan Cumming and others are expected to join the cast, adding a new layer to the storyline. Furthermore, there is an assurance that we will finally uncover the mystery surrounding Mrs. Flood, a character who will appear in every episode for clarification on her current state.
Besides Mrs. Flood, we might discover who is orchestrating this narrative, and who The Doctor must confront in order to find some respite amidst these ongoing battles with deities. However, considering the one who can command figures like Toymaker, Maestro, and Sutekh won’t be an easy adversary, it seems that The Doctor may be up against his toughest challenge yet.
It’s clear that Millie Gibson will play Ruby Sunday again, despite the addition of Belinda Chandra as a new companion. However, whether this will be sufficient to guarantee another season remains uncertain, as the BBC will assess viewership following the current season before deciding on a renewal. Let’s hope that the latest trailer will entice viewers to return and secure more seasons with Russell T. Davies continuing his creative direction.
On this coming Saturday, April 12th, Doctor Who will make its comeback on Disney+. I’m eagerly anticipating a solid audience for the premiere episode and hopeful indications that we can continue enjoying the adventures of The Doctor and their companions traversing the cosmos without any concerns in the near future.
