As a seasoned gamer and movie enthusiast with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the latest revelation about Deadpool & Wolverine is nothing short of amusing, albeit slightly confusing. The fact that Disney, known for its family-friendly image, allowed such jabs at themselves and their cinematic universe is quite unexpected, to say the least.
Initially, when the news broke about Deadpool 3 being a Marvel Studios production, the most common question people had was whether Deadpool would retain his characteristic self under Disney’s management. The studio repeatedly assured fans that the movie would maintain its R-rating and stay true to the Deadpool essence as desired. Indeed, with the pairing of Deadpool & Wolverine, they delivered on that promise, albeit there were a few jokes that Disney might have found a bit uneasy.
In a humorous turn of events, Deadpool and Wolverine take aim at the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and Disney, with Deadpool even poking fun at Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige. The duo joked about non-existent Marvel films, and even touched upon subjects Disney had requested Deadpool to avoid humorously. Remarkably, it seems that Disney was unfazed by these jabs. Director Shawn Levy revealed to Entertainment Weekly (EW) that only one joke in the entire movie needed alteration. The changed joke remains a secret, as per Levy’s statement. He elaborated…
Essentially, the guideline is to avoid belittling those who are vulnerable and to mock only those who can handle it. Interestingly, whenever it came to Hugh, he was always the one who found it hilarious in a self-referential manner. There was just one scene in the entire film that we were instructed to rewrite. Ryan and I have agreed to keep this line intact until our last breath.
Ryan Reynolds clarified with io9 that he wasn’t ordered to alter the joke in question, but rather asked politely. The anonymous Disney executive who made the request was clear that they were okay with keeping the original joke, but preferred the adjustment. Ultimately, Reynolds chose to comply with the request and modify the joke.
Although we’re unsure about the initial humor, it’s apparent that the original joke might have been related to Ryan Reynolds’ posterior, given the replacement joke. The substituted joke seemed to revolve around Pinocchio engaging in a suggestive act. As Levy went on…
But I will say that it was replaced with an equally dirty line of dialogue about Pinocchio shoving his face up Deadpool’s ass and starting to lie like crazy. I was like, ‘Ryan, that’s your replacement line in response to, ‘Can we clean it up?’ That’s Ryan Reynolds for you, audacious to the very edge.
If the executive found Disney’s Pinocchio interacting inappropriately with Deadpool to be a funnier joke, it leaves one curious about what the initial joke could have been. We’re not entirely sure what was wrong with the original joke. Was it even more explicit? Did it involve a Marvel or Disney reference that was more controversial than others? According to Levy and Reynolds, we may never find out, and given that we still don’t know who leaked the initial Deadpool test footage, there’s no reason to think this secret will ever be revealed.
