Ryan Reynolds & Anna Faris’ Wildly Underrated Christmas Comedy ‘Just Friends’ Is a Streaming Hit

As a long-time movie enthusiast who has seen my fair share of holiday films, I must say that Just Friends has become one of my hidden gems for Christmas viewing. While it may not have received the warmest welcome upon its release back in 2005, this romantic comedy has grown on me over the years and now holds a special place in my holiday movie rotation.

At times, a film may not instantly resonate with audiences, such as the 2005 Christmas romantic comedy “Just Friends.” Initially, the movie didn’t fare exceptionally well commercially upon release. However, over the years, it has developed a small but dedicated following, becoming something of a cult classic and a regular addition to the Christmas movie lineup for certain viewers. This trend seems to have continued this year as “Just Friends” is seeing increased popularity on streaming platforms as Christmas draws near.

Currently, “Just Friends” stands at the 10th spot on Hulu’s list of most-watched films, likely due to its increased appeal during streaming sessions as Christmas approaches. With audiences often seeking out holiday-themed movies, it’s no surprise that this film is gaining traction. The movie offers a relaxed viewing experience, combining elements of romance and humor effectively. Its talented cast, led by Adam ‘Tex’ Davis’ screenplay, delivers engaging performances throughout the film.

Under the guidance of director Roger Kumble, the movie “Just Friends” centers around Chris Brander (Ryan Reynolds), a once overweight high school student who strives to move beyond being just friends with Jamie Palamino (Amy Smart) following their reunion in his hometown during Christmas. Besides Reynolds and Smart, the film features Anna Faris, Chris Klein, and Christopher Marquette in prominent roles.

Just Friends Received Mixed Reviews Upon Release

Initially, the film “Just Friends” received a blend of positive and negative responses upon its debut. It garnered a rating of 43% on Rotten Tomatoes, with the general consensus being, “This comedy is quite expansive, but unfortunately, it’s rarely funny.” However, moviegoers who watched it on the first day gave it a respectable “B-“. Interestingly, the audience score on Rotten Tomatoes indicates that regular film viewers found the movie more amusing than professional critics, with an approval rating of 71%.

Following a fairly average debut weekend of $9.1 million, ranking sixth during the Thanksgiving holiday, the movie “Just Friends” managed to hold its ground at the box office, amassing a total of $32.5 million within the U.S. and $50.9 million globally by the end of its run. The film faced tough competition upon release, including the second week of “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,” the debut of “Yours, Mine & Ours,” the fourth successful weekend of “Chicken Little,” and “Rent.

Over time following its debut, the film “Just Friends” has gained popularity as an unusual yet beloved holiday movie choice. On various social platforms as Christmas draws near, it’s often mentioned with enthusiasm. To me, it’s worth a viewing simply for Faris’ captivating acting. The comedy sensation takes center stage as Samantha James, a pop star character yearning to date Chris despite his resistance after their one date ended up requiring hospitalization. She skillfully plays into amusing pop star stereotypes and shines brightly in every scene she graces with her presence.

Just Friends is currently streaming on Hulu.
