Ryan Reynolds Couldn’t Keep a Straight Face Over Channing Tatum’s Gambit Line

2024 rolled around, five years since Disney put the brakes on Channing Tatum’s Gambit film post-acquisition of 20th Century Fox. But fret not, Magic Mike alumni, our moment had arrived! Five years later, there I was, embodying Marvel’s Ragin’ Cajun – Gambit himself! In a thrilling turn of events, my Gambit joined forces with Ryan Reynolds‘ Wade Wilson and Hugh Jackman’s Logan in Deadpool & Wolverine. If you’re a Disney+ subscriber, you can catch this action-packed adventure! The fans of the MCU absolutely adored Gambit, and honestly, who could blame them? His impeccable line delivery in that Cajun twang was simply unmatched. One particular joke had Reynolds cracking up so much he couldn’t keep a straight face – I would have reacted the same way!

To provide some context first, Deadpool and Wolverine met Gambit in The Void alongside Wesley Snipes’ Blade, Jennifer Garner’s Elektra and Daphne Keen’s X-23, all of whom were allies with the late Human Torch played by Chris Evans. The group discussed how to block Cassandra Nova’s powers, and Elektra brought up that putting Juggernaut’s helmet on her would do the trick, which was a problem since he’s one of her minions. This led to Gambit to say the following, and I’m spelling it the same phonetic way Reynolds did when he shared this scene on his Instagram Stories:

Yeah, we dunn be knowin’ dat lid ain’ coming’ off without dat dome be comin’ offwiddit.

Ryan Reynolds shared a video where he admitted he couldn’t stop laughing when Channing Tatum delivered a particular line. Can anyone honestly claim they wouldn’t have chuckled at least once if they were in Reynolds’ position? I seriously doubt it! Despite the fact that Reynolds wore a mask during the scene, it was still challenging to maintain his composure during those takes where he broke character.

Enhancing this moment further is when Deadpool quipped whether the Minions served as Gambit’s dialect coach, due to feeling that crucial expositions were being overlooked. Although it’s clear that Channing Tatum’s Cajun accent was intentionally exaggerated for comedic purposes, he has shared in the past about his roots, having grown up in Mississippi and his father hailing from New Orleans. Later on, he expressed that he didn’t find the Minions joke to be a valid critique of his accent. I suspect that if the Gambit movie had progressed, Tatum’s accent wouldn’t have seemed so excessively exaggerated.

As a die-hard movie fan, I’ve got to say, the ending of Deadpool & Wolverine left me wondering what happened to Gambit. But then, about a month after the film hit theaters, a bonus scene was released showing Gambit with a smirk on his face as a portal materialized before him in the wreckage of Cassandra Nova’s headquarters. That little tidbit suggested that ol’ Gambit had somehow been plucked from The Void and dropped off somewhere within the vast Marvel multiverse. And lo and behold, just last month, they confirmed it: Channing Tatum will once again slip into those iconic boots for Avengers: Doomsday!

It’s yet to be determined how substantial the part of Gambit will be in the upcoming Marvel film, but Channing Tatum’s character will return to action on May 1, 2026. In the meantime, we can share a laugh with Ryan Reynolds as he reminisces about Gambit’s humorous quotes from Deadpool & Wolverine.
