As a seasoned cinephile who has traversed through the labyrinth of cinematic universes, I must say that the latest twist in the Deadpool & Wolverine saga has left me both amused and intrigued. The cat is finally out of the bag regarding Rob McElhenney’s cut cameo, and while it’s unfortunate that we didn’t get to see him as a TVA soldier, I can understand why Ryan Reynolds had to make the tough call.
Ryan Reynolds recently disclosed the reason behind Rob McElhenney’s deleted scene appearance in the Deadpool and Wolverine movie. By sharing an extensive Instagram post, he kept the buzz around this significant Marvel film alive at the weekend box office.
Although numerous ideas and scenes were discarded during the production of the movie Deadpool & Wolverine, McElhenney’s cameo as a TVA soldier was teased by the actor following filming. However, when the film was released in theaters, he expressed disappointment that his scenes didn’t make the final cut, accusing Reynolds of not keeping his promise. It appears now that McElhenney had some justification for this claim, as Reynolds suggested later on that it wasn’t his decision to exclude those scenes from the final edit. He explained:
As a seasoned filmmaker who has spent countless hours in the editing room, I can attest that making difficult decisions is an unavoidable part of the creative process. One such decision I had to make during the production of #DeadpoolAndWolverine was to cut a precious cameo appearance by my cherished friend, Rob McElhenney. It was like losing a dear friend all over again.
Reynolds pointed out that the scene didn’t perform as well as anticipated, but thanks to McElhenney’s participation, it stayed in the final edit longer than it might have otherwise. He added:
“In truth, I found making this movie a delight, yet it wasn’t devoid of pressure. High expectations loomed, and I can’t help but think that Expectation itself may be the most eloquently crafted villain in film history. The stressful moments seemed less daunting when friends were around. Despite his unexpected trip to London for a role that ultimately didn’t materialize, I owe him a debt of gratitude for being there with me on set. My friend has this magical ability to calm my heart and silence the chaos within me. He always shows up for others, and he was no exception in standing by me. Even as his character begged for mercy before being swallowed by Alioth, only to be transformed into Alioth-poo, I can’t help but remember him fondly as TVA Soldier.”
Deadpool & Wolverine Had Enough Cameos for Most Fans
Although Reynolds didn’t intend for McElhenney to be absent from the movie, given that they jointly own the British football team Wrexham AFC, the film still delivered a variety of cameos and Easter eggs to compensate for McElhenney’s missing appearance. The movie, titled Deadpool & Wolverine, surpassed many fans’ expectations by incorporating lesser-known or long-forgotten characters from various Marvel realms, ranging from Wesley Snipes to Jon Favreau and everyone in between.
It’s probable that Reynolds will include McElhenney’s cameo when Deadpool & Wolverine is released on home video platforms, but for now, fans can catch the movie in theaters without his scene as it nears the end of its successful run at the box office. Despite no official date being set for the digital and physical release of Deadpool & Wolverine, an announcement about its availability is expected soon.
