As a seasoned movie critic who has spent countless hours in dimly-lit cinemas, I can confidently say that the prospect of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman teaming up for “Boy Band” is music to my ears. The pairing of these two charismatic actors in a comedy about former boy band members reuniting in middle age is bound to be a delightful spectacle.
In 2025, it appears that Ryan Reynolds might temporarily step away from acting roles, but this isn’t indicative of him slowing down. Instead, the multitalented Canadian artist (actor, director, writer, and producer) is already immersed in what could be his upcoming project alongside his Deadpool & Wolverine co-star Hugh Jackman. The comedy movie titled “Boy Band” revolves around a group of former boy band members coming back together in their middle age.
Even though some might be fatigued by their ongoing friendship, it’s hard to ignore the idea of another film featuring these two, as it promises to be an exciting spectacle. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Reynolds discussed various aspects of his busy career (from being a stakeholder in Welsh football to leading Maximum Effort production company, and everything in between, including his playful interactions with Martha Stewart), but the project that has us intrigued is this new film with frequent collaborator Shawn Levy, who directed their last Marvel venture.
What Is ‘Boy Band’ And Who Else Is Currently Involved In The Project?
Despite stating he’s still grappling with the movie, Reynolds has acknowledged that he’s been diligently working on the second draft of the script. He commented, “The initial draft was exceptional, penned by one of my favorite authors, Jesse Andrews [Me and Earl and the Dying Girl]. Now I find myself alone in the process. There are no set dates as of now, and I won’t be filming anything for at least a year. This project seems to require a humble budget, one that wouldn’t primarily focus on hiring top-tier actors.
The movie, titled “Boy Band,” apparently narrates the tale of two ex-boy band members, now middle-aged, attempting to break free from the old image of them that binds them in the present, due to their past success. This plotline seems particularly relevant given that many late 90s and early 2000s boy bands are currently trying to reinvent themselves.
Reynolds echoed the sentiment, adding that:
Many members of boy bands often found themselves in challenging situations due to managers who abandoned them during their peak success. These individuals, often still adolescents, struggled with handling fame that most people would find difficult to manage, especially considering they based a significant portion of their self-worth on the adoration of screaming fans. This can lead to a sort of cultural stagnation, as they are constantly linked to that phase of their lives. We’re talking about individuals in their 40s and 50s trying to reclaim control over their lives. I find something profoundly beautiful in this journey. As a producer, my guiding principle is joy. I believe the entertainment industry can become quite cynical, and it doesn’t age well.
It’s no secret that many people are wondering: how many members from boy bands could potentially appear in this movie? With groups like 98 Degrees, *NSYNC, The Backstreet Boys, and even New Kids on the Block getting back together for tours recently, it seems likely that quite a few of them might be interested. Imagine Reynolds and Jackman facing off with their singing and dancing against stars like Justin Timberlake, Nick Carter, or JC Chasez!
Boy Band is currently in development and does not yet have a release date.
