As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the vibrant world of comic book adaptations, I can wholeheartedly attest to the thrilling spectacle that is Deadpool & Wolverine. The film’s unique blend of humor, action, and heart-wrenching moments is nothing short of extraordinary.
There’s plenty to love about the billion-dollar hit Deadpool & Wolverine, including its bloody action, profane humor, wonderful character moments and impressive Marvel cameos. A standout sequences, though, occurs at the end of D&W, as Wade Wilson and Logan work together to stop the Time Ripper device. Both of the heroes ultimately survive the situation but, as it turns out, the ending could’ve been quite different. Ryan Reynolds shares that the original conclusion featured a franchise OG’s death. And I’m honestly glad plans changed.
Ryan Reynolds has been dishing out delightful backstage tidbits from the movie D&W ever since it hit theaters as part of the 2024 film lineup. This past week, he got quite enthusiastic on Instagram about the music, particularly focusing on the incorporation of Madonna’s popular track, “Like A Prayer,” which is played during the Time Ripper scene. As he shared the story behind this, Reynolds revealed that another powerful X-Man (who has been present in all three Deadpool films) was initially intended to meet an untimely end.
Since 2017, I’ve been envisioning “Like a Prayer” as the soundtrack for Deadpool’s third movie. Before Wolverine became involved, my vision was of a single, motion-controlled shot sequence featuring Colossus as my dance partner. However, Colossus would have perished in the previous scene, causing Deadpool to descend into a furious state of rage and revenge. All of this was meant to unfold while Madonna’s powerful song, “Like a Prayer,” played. But with Hugh Jackman joining the cast, everything changed for everyone (and Colossus, thankfully, remained unscathed in both life and chastity).
In its current state, the scene carries a heavy emotional weight, largely due to the music that accompanies it. Even without Colossus holding Wade’s hand and passing away, fans would likely have felt deeply moved by the scene. Regardless, the scene effectively conveys the intended emotions, and it appears that the actor-producer is satisfied with how things unfolded. In the Deadpool franchise, the character known as Colossus, a colossal metallic hero, first appeared in the initial release of 2016. Throughout the series, this hero, whose true identity is Peter Rasputin, primarily appears in his metal form and serves as a sort of moral compass for Wade Wilson. Notably, he attempted to enlist Wilson into the X-Men alongside the reluctant Negasonic Teenage Warhead. Although Wade doesn’t always take Rasputin’s guidance, they remain friends.
I would have been disappointed if the popular metal X-Man was killed off, given the reasons stated earlier. It would have been a daring narrative choice and carried a heavy emotional impact. Moreover, Rasputin’s death would have been heroic. However, I prefer the idea of the kind-hearted powerhouse surviving and escaping death. The only drawback to the story alterations after Hugh Jackman decided to reprise his role as Wolverine is that it led to Peter having less screen time in the third film, similar to other original characters.
I express my thoughts with a sense of enthusiasm, as I’m a fan of both Deadpool and Wolverine. I found the emotional moments particularly impactful, and the “Like A Prayer” scene really resonated deeply. Now, we’ll find out if the song played during that (scene without Colossus) will be Grammy-worthy, as Ryan Reynolds and his team aim for recognition in that category.
