Ryan Reynolds Reveals Original Deadpool & Wolverine Title...and Why It Was Changed Last Minute

As a long-time gamer and avid Marvel fan, I can’t help but be thrilled by the latest revelation from none other than Ryan Reynolds himself about the original title for Deadpool & Wolverine. It’s fascinating to learn that the movie was originally called “Deadpool and Friend,” which caused quite a stir among fans when it leaked online.

As a huge fan, I’m thrilled to share that during their recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds revealed an interesting tidbit about the original title for the much-anticipated Deadpool and Wolverine project. He shared that it was initially called “Deadpool & Friend,” but thanks to passionate fan reactions, they decided to change it to something more fitting. Reynolds described the arduous negotiations with Marvel to ensure the final product didn’t deviate too far from the authentic Deadpool vibe.

I’ve lived through some fascinating experiences in the world of movie production, and one story that stands out is the evolution of the Deadpool film title. Up until the Super Bowl in question, the working title for the project was “Deadpool and Friend.” Yes, you read that right – not just Deadpool, but Deadpool with a friend tagged along.

Back in February, before the Super Bowl unveiled the first Deadpool trailer, there was a leak. Fans expressed their disappointment online, but realistically, Deadpool & Friends aligned with Deadpool’s witty humor. Despite this, the title underwent a change, which proved to be quite challenging.

“I Will Never Call This Deadpool and Friend,” Ryan Reynolds Declared

As a gamer, I found it unexpected that Reynolds had to argue so much to transform “Deadpool & Friend” into “Deadpool & Wolverine” for the movie title. You’d assume the studio would be excited about including one of Marvel’s most beloved characters in the title. But as Reynolds shared…

Shawn Levy, an exceptional director who’s both our friend and dear colleague, and I spent hours in the editing room. We felt strongly that the title needed changing, so we reached out to Disney and Marvel. However, they had already printed and distributed over 9000 posters with “Deadpool” and “Friend” in large seven-foot standees. Despite our persistence, they had been reluctant to accommodate our requests throughout the project.

I’ve been through some tough negotiations in my career, and this one was no exception. When Deadpool and his team came to me with their proposal, I knew it wasn’t what was best for me. But we weren’t about to take “no” for an answer. So, I rolled up my sleeves and got to work. I renegotiated the contract, making some compromises that were difficult but necessary.

As a longtime fan of both Deadpool and Wolverine, I’m beyond excited about the upcoming movie, “Deadpool & Wolverine.” Having grown up reading their comic book adventures and watching their live-action appearances, it feels surreal to see these iconic characters finally teaming up on the big screen.

The U.S. release date for “Deadpool & Wolverine,” a forthcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) production featuring Deadpool and Wolverine, is set for July 26, 2024, as part of phase five.
