As a seasoned gamer and movie enthusiast with a penchant for behind-the-scenes stories, I must admit, the saga of Moana’s production has been quite the rollercoaster ride! The relentless pursuit of paparazzi to capture every sneak peek is a tale as old as Hollywood itself.
The sequel to “Moana,” referred to as M2, surpassed $600 million at the global box office, indicating it’s likely to outperform its predecessor’s $643 million global earnings. Moreover, M2 hinted at a third installment in a mid-credits scene, suggesting that a sequel is imminent. However, prior to the arrival of the threequel, we can anticipate a live-action remake of the 2016 animated Moana film, which will star Dwayne Johnson. Remarkably, details about this new production have leaked, thanks to persistent paparazzi who’ve seemingly discovered an innovative method for taking photos.
Making movies appears to be an ongoing struggle between filmmakers striving to maintain the enchantment of movie-making and photographers from the paparazzi who are eager to capture that perfect shot and be the first to publish an image of an actor in costume. Lately, photos from the set of Moana, featuring Dwayne Johnson’s Maui body suit, have been widely shared online. Johnston shared with Variety that the movie had successfully obstructed the photographers on land using walls. However, the paparazzi found a way around this by approaching from the sea. He elaborated…
We took photos outdoors, and when those images emerged later, I exclaimed, ‘Oh no, we’ve been discovered!’, because we were constructing barriers to keep the paparazzi away. However, they managed to sneak in by boat and began snapping our photos.
The lengths photographers, known as paparazzi, will take to capture sellable photos is evident. It appears that film production officials believed they were secure by obstructing land views, and it’s likely that the movie required the water to be unobstructed for some scenes. Unfortunately, this left no opportunity for ambitious photographers who might have rented boats to snap pictures. If the photos fetched a higher price than the boat rental cost, I suppose they came out ahead.
In the photos shared online, Dwayne Johnson appeared noticeably larger than typical, causing speculation among some that he might be wearing a muscle-enhancing suit on set. However, the quality of the images made this uncertain. Later, Johnson admitted to using a body suit in the pictures, which only amplified his already formidable physique. What’s more intriguing is that the suit serves to cover Maui’s extensive tattoos, saving significant time compared to having them painted artistically.
Movie productions involving breastfeeding scenes often encounter unwanted paparazzi as an unfortunate reality. For example, unauthorized photos of James Gunn’s ‘Superman’ production surfaced, disclosing certain details about the film. To a certain extent, such incidents are hard to prevent, a fact that James Gunn acknowledged later on.
When making movies on soundstages, they can more conveniently manage access; however, given that Moana requires a beach setting, a significant portion will need to be shot outdoors. On the bright side, since everyone is aware of what Moana involves, there are likely no major spoilers that need to be carefully guarded.
Watch the classic film “Moana” online with your Disney+ membership right away, and don’t forget to catch the new sequel in cinemas! By the way, mark your calendars for July 10, 2026, as that’s when the live-action remake will hit theaters.
