As a seasoned gamer who has traversed virtual landscapes and architectural marvels, I must admit that experiencing the real-world beauty of Sabine Marcelis‘ “Vondel Fountain, Stacked” was a breathtaking journey. Having spent countless hours admiring the intricate details of digital structures, this onyx fountain in Amsterdam’s Vondelpark is an impressive testament to the power of simple forms and the transformative capabilities of materials.
Should you find yourself strolling through Amsterdam’s Vondelpark, you could encounter an unexpected scene. Standing out prominently near one of the park’s lakes, it’s quite difficult to overlook – a striking, newly installed fountain made from large pieces of onyx stone.
Originating from Rotterdam and collaborating with materials brand SolidNature, Sabine Marcelis has been developing the “Vondel Fountain, Stacked” for quite some time now. As suggested by its name, this sculpture features blocks neatly stacked together, a trait that reflects Marcelis’ penchant for minimalist designs.
As you stroll by the lake, the perspective of the fountain shifts based on your viewing angle. It sprays water from two directions, offering a calming symphony of flowing water.
Marcelis expressed his profound fascination with the potential of various materials and their ability to transform into significant shapes and encounters. He frequently incorporates water into his projects, using it not only as a tool but also drawing inspiration from it.
This isn’t the first fountain I’ve designed, nor is it the initial one manufactured by SolidNature. Instead, it symbolizes the longevity of my collaboration with SolidNature. I mention this in light of my previous projects such as the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion in Barcelona and high-end fashion brand Fendi. These experiences have broadened my perspective on the impact of water in shaping environments, particularly through its flow, noise, and the atmosphere it generates.
A remarkable engineering project, this fountain will be stationary for a period of three months. As stated by David Mahyari, CEO of SolidNature, it serves not just as an attractive display, but also as evidence of the company’s commitment to sustainable practices. By reusing these materials, we not only minimize waste but also demonstrate the durability and timeless beauty of natural stone, according to him.
During the Amsterdam Fashion Week (September 6-9), I got a glimpse of the latest addition to the city’s landscape – the Vondel Fountain, Stacked, a masterpiece that was grandly revealed.
