SAG-AFTRA Donates $1 Million for L.A. Fires Relief

In response to the escalating financial burden caused by the destructive wildfires in Los Angeles County, the performers’ union SAG-AFTRA has promised a $1 million contribution to aid affected union members who have been impacted by this disaster.

The labor organization is contributing money to the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, a charitable group providing emergency financial assistance and educational resources for union workers. As union president Fran Drescher expressed in a press release, “The devastation brought about by these fires, the tragic loss of life and homes, has been deeply saddening. Of course, our sympathies are with everyone affected. However, we felt that we could do more; it is our hope that this donation will alleviate some of the suffering and aid those affected in rebuilding their lives following this disaster.

Beginning on Tuesday, a string of wildfires ignited by strong winds in the Los Angeles region have ravaged over many thousands of acres, causing extensive damage to Pacific Palisades and Altadena’s unincorporated area. At least 10,000 buildings have been destroyed, leading to the displacement of thousands of residents. This unfortunate group includes well-known members of SAG-AFTRA, such as Mandy Moore, Paris Hilton, Jeff Bridges, and Milo Ventimiglia, among others.

A labor union’s fundamental principle is unity: we all strive to uplift one another during peaceful periods, and stand together during troubled times,” explained Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, the union’s national executive director, in a statement. “The distress is overwhelming, even for those of us experiencing it firsthand. We’re incredibly lucky to have the SAG-AFTRA Foundation as a resource and a refuge where our members can seek help during difficult times.

Crabtree-Ireland encouraged those individuals who haven’t been shielded from severe hardships due to the wildfires to offer assistance in any way possible – whether through volunteering, donating, or other means – to support their peers who have been greatly affected.

Over 160,000 strong SAG-AFTRA union, encompassing actors alongside broadcast journalists, dancers, voice artists, puppeteers, and news scribes, has temporarily shut down its Wilshire Boulevard headquarters as a safety measure amidst the ongoing wildfire threat.

In response to the mounting impacts of the wildfires becoming increasingly apparent, SAG-AFTRA has joined the ranks of organizations offering assistance. Last Friday, Disney announced a $15 million donation towards organizations providing aid, including the American Red Cross and the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation. Additionally, the CAA Foundation has teamed up with Sean Penn’s CORE and the LAUSD Education Foundation to establish a fund to provide relief, while renowned L.A. dining establishments like Din Tai Fung, Jitlada, and Spago have also vowed support for those affected by these disasters.
