SAG-AFTRA Foundation Opens Meryl Streep Center for Performing Arts, Resumes In-Person Programs in L.A.

As a long-time admirer of the silver screen and a devoted supporter of the performing arts, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of awe as I contemplate the grand opening of the Meryl Streep Center for Performing Artists. The sheer magnitude of this endeavor is breathtaking, with its cutting-edge facilities and unparalleled resources designed to nurture the talents of countless performers.

The SAG-AFTRA Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports professional development and charitable activities for Hollywood’s largest actors union, will be unveiling its newly built Los Angeles headquarter on Monday, named the Meryl Streep Center for Performing Artists.

The Center is now situated in a magnificent penthouse at 5757 Wilshire Blvd., previously occupied by another business that vacated during the pandemic. This modern facility, acquired as a result, will primarily serve to bolster various initiatives aimed at empowering SAG-AFTRA artists through expert guidance and skill enhancement, ultimately propelling their careers forward. Activities like the “Conversations” series, which includes career-spanning interviews with renowned actors, that were temporarily halted during the relocation process, will recommence in this new venue. The facility will also accommodate the foundation’s aid programs and administrative offices.

The board of directors at the foundation chose to designate the building as ‘The Meryl Streep Center’, honoring the esteemed actress who has been the most generous contributor to the foundation throughout its almost 40-year existence. Courtney B. Vance, the president and chairman of the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, commented in a statement, “Meryl Streep’s quiet yet consistent support for our foundation, as well as her fellow actors, for decades has been truly remarkable. During challenging times in our community, Meryl was quick to provide aid to those in need. By naming our new Center after her, we aim to express our appreciation for her unyielding dedication and generosity, while also symbolizing the exceptional standard she upholds within our industry.”

Vance commented, “The Meryl Streep Performing Arts Center will foster and cultivate the skills of numerous performers, acting as a guiding light for us all. We are incredibly proud to present this lively new venue where SAG-AFTRA artists can interact, work together, and develop. We eagerly look forward to the extraordinary achievements, innovation, and careers that it will spawn.”

Cyd Wilson, as the head of the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, also offered her thoughts: “The launch of the Meryl Streep Center for Performing Artists represents a significant achievement for our organization. This Center will offer exceptional resources and chances, with no cost to SAG-AFTRA actors. Being the sole industry nonprofit focused on offering free services and resources specifically for these performers, we eagerly anticipate restarting our in-person activities in Los Angeles in this cutting-edge facility, and for the first time, everything housed together. Furthermore, the foundation manages and runs its programs in Los Angeles, New York, and online through charitable donations, grants, and sponsorships.”

As a devoted admirer, I’m thrilled to share that our foundation has chosen to honor several generous supporters by naming spaces within our Center after them. For instance, the 100-seat, cutting-edge Screening Room bears the names of Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, where our Conversations programs and The Business panels will take place. The Green Room, a tranquil haven for special guests, carries the name of Nicole Kidman. Lastly, the On-Camera Lab, a space for actors to enhance their on-screen presence, is proudly named after Leonardo DiCaprio. Equipped with high-quality camera, lighting, and sound equipment, this lab offers an exceptional platform for actors to record professional self-tapes.

The foundation has moved and improved the Don LaFontaine Voiceover Studio, a facility offering voice actors the chance to record voiceovers, hone their skills, and collaborate on ventures like animations, video games, ads, and audiobooks at its new location in the center.

As a gamer, diving into the Center, I’ll find myself equipped with not just virtual worlds, but real-life classrooms too! Here, I can learn the ropes from industry experts on topics like acting techniques, audition preparation, casting, and career management – all geared towards my gaming-to-real-life transition.

The Center can be booked for external events such as industry screenings, premieres, For Your Consideration (FYC) functions, script read-throughs, and corporate gatherings, among others. If you’re interested, please reach out to rentals@sagaftra.foundation.

The foundation urges every SAG-AFTRA member to make full use of the resources available at the Center. To access these benefits, members should initially set up a profile on the website: www.sagaftra.foundation.
