Salem's Lot Trailer Lifts the Coffin Lid on Delayed Stephen King Remake

As a lifelong cinephile who has witnessed the rise and fall of countless horror adaptations, I must say that the upcoming Salem’s Lot reboot has truly piqued my interest. The stellar cast, led by Jordan Preston Carter and Bill Camp, promises to breathe new life into this classic tale of terror.

Featuring Makenzie Leigh as Susan Norton, Alfre Woodard as Dr. Cody, Bill Camp as Matthew Burke, and Pilou Asbæk as Richard Straker, this new adaptation marks the third rendition of Salem’s Lot, following the 1979 film directed by Tobe Hooper (of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre fame), and the 2004 miniseries starring Rob Lowe. While there was a theatrical sequel in 1987, A Return to Salem’s Lot, under Larry Cohen’s direction, let’s just say we prefer not to bring that up.

I’m elated to report that in the role of a movie critic, I can confirm that the 2024 Max version of the film, masterfully directed by Gary Dauberman, appears to be faithfully following Stephen King‘s novel. This is music to the ears of author Neil Gaiman himself, who expressed his gratitude during an interview with MovieWeb last month, stating that this newest adaptation truly “does justice to the book.

I’m thrilled by it! I took a peek and it’s absolutely fantastic. It’s an outstanding film. I have high expectations that others will feel the same way. In my opinion, it faithfully adapts the book… Gary Dauberman does an excellent job showcasing his unique talents.

Stephen King Gave His Seal of Approval to Salem’s Lot

By mid-2022, filming for Salem’s Lot was scheduled to conclude, preparing it for a theater release later in the year. However, due to COVID-related issues impacting post-production, the release date was pushed back to April 2023. The situation became even more challenging when a SAG-AFTRA strike occurred, causing widespread chaos that made a smooth release seem uncertain. For a moment, it appeared as if the film might become as elusive as the long-lost project Coyote vs. Acme. Fortunately, Stephen King intervened.

Due to a recent post on X (previously known as Twitter), penned by an acclaimed writer, it became challenging for many to overlook the reboot, which he commended as being of high quality.

According to Dauberman, the crucial decision or input from Steve was the push Salem’s Lot required to get the project moving and establish a definite release date. He recently expressed his gratitude for Steve’s assistance in an interview with Total Film, stating that it served as a significant boost during challenging periods of the production process without elaborating further.

Enthusiasts from all around will determine if the patience was justified as Salem’s Lot, long anticipated, officially premieres on Max on October 3.
