Sam Raimi Might Return For Doctor Strange 3 After Multiverse Of Madness And I'm Excited But Have My Trepidations

As a lifelong gamer and Marvel fan who has seen more than a few late-night screenings of “Evil Dead” trilogy, I can say that the prospect of Sam Raimi returning to direct Doctor Strange 3 fills me with both excitement and trepidation. On one hand, the man’s love for horror and visual flair elevated “Multiverse of Madness” beyond the typical MCU formula, giving us moments like Zombie Strange and Wanda’s mirror-dimension rampage that were truly unforgettable.

It’s no surprise that Benedict Cumberbatch is reprising his role as Doctor Strange in the MCU, but his next appearance won’t be in a standalone Marvel movie. Instead, he’ll make an appearance in the recently unveiled “Avengers: Doomsday.” However, don’t fret if you’re a fan of Stephen Strange; there are whispers about a potential “Doctor Strange 3,” and if they’re accurate, the talented Sam Raimi, who directed 2022’s “Multiverse of Madness” and some of the top horror films, might return to direct. I’m thrilled about this possibility, but I have a few concerns. Let’s delve into them!

My First Reaction Is—Awesome!

As per a report by Jeff Sneider of InSneider.com, it appears that the producer behind “Boy Kills World” is on the verge of signing a deal to direct “Doctor Strange 3.” If this is accurate, the return of the director from “Spider-Man” to helm “Doctor Strange 3” would be an incredibly exciting development. The “Multiverse of Madness” showcased some remarkable instances where the distinctive style of the director of “Drag Me To Hell” was evident—his affinity for horror, the unique visual touches, and the seamless integration of terror and humor. When given the freedom to embrace his roots with sequences like Zombie Strange and Wanda’s rampage in the mirror dimension, the film moved beyond the conventional Marvel Cinematic Universe formula.

It’s an exciting prospect that Marvel might entrust Raimi with control once more. His imagination transformed “Multiverse of Madness” into something distinctively outlandish, and if there’s someone who can explore the limits of the Sorcerer Supreme’s complex universe, it’s him. Given the multiverse concept allows him to delve as far into the strange as he desires, I can’t wait to see how this filmmaker tackles that challenge in a potential third “Strange” movie.

I Have Trepidations About A Raimi Return

It’s certainly intriguing to speculate about the Darkman screenwriter returning for Doctor Strange 3, but there are some reservations that I can’t help but express. One of my main worries, similar to after the Multiverse of Madness, is whether Marvel will give him complete creative control. In the previous movie, we saw glimpses of Sam Raimi’s unique, strange style, but there were also instances where it seemed like the studio was restricting him. The film struggled to balance its horror elements with the need to stay within Marvel’s PG-13, family-friendly rating.

I can’t help but think of Deadpool 3 and how the creative team there reportedly was given mostly free rein to embrace the R-rated absurdity of that character. This creative freedom Deadpool and Wolverine were able to embrace paid off, as the flick ended up breaking box office records for the company. If the 64-year-old director returns, I hope Marvel gives him that same freedom. Let him go wild with the dark, campy, and downright bizarre. That’s when Raimi’s films shine brightest.

I Would Prefer Sam Raimi To Return For Spider-Man 4

While I’m thrilled about the prospect of Sam Raimi potentially rejoining Doctor Strange, I can’t help but wish that the talk about Spider-Man 4 was instead real. Ever since No Way Home brought back the magic of their Spidey collaboration with Tobey Maguire, fans (myself included) have been eagerly hoping for The Quick and the Dead director to team up with him again. The original Spider-Man trilogy holds a special place in our hearts, and the idea of the man behind those films revisiting his work feels like a long-cherished dream.

There have been numerous speculations surrounding a potential “Spider-Man 4,” although no official announcement has been made yet. Nevertheless, director Sam Raimi, who previously helmed “Army of Darkness,” has given hints about how he would craft the fourth film in his Spider-Man universe. This vision, if realized, could feature a matured Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker grappling with the repercussions of his past, under Raimi’s direction in a familiar and cherished universe – a prospect that seems almost ideal. However, it might be too good to be true, but I certainly hope otherwise.

Regardless if Sam Raimi revisits Doctor Strange or potentially a fresh Spider-Man venture (fingers crossed), it’s undeniable that fans will eagerly rush to witness the enchantment he concocts next. If Marvel grants him the artistic freedom to fully embrace his distinctive quirkiness, Doctor Strange 3 could be another exceptional addition to the MCU. I merely pray the studio allows him to create freely, as we fans prefer him: unrestrained, unforeseeable, and shamelessly peculiar.

If you, as a dedicated fan, yearn to reexperience Sam Raimi’s remarkable superhero movie ventures, his original Spider-Man trilogy and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness are readily accessible for streaming, all thanks to subscribing to Disney+.
