A frequently underestimated gladiator drama, now celebrating its 15th anniversary, has spectators cheering once more on Starz. This show, produced by Sam Raimi, director of Spider-Man, and created by Steven S. DeKnight, presented a historically accurate tale drenched in blood and sensuality that many consider a forerunner to series like Game of Thrones. Although it didn’t quite reach those levels, particularly with critics, the large-scale production, graphic violence, and ample nudity ensured its success over four seasons before concluding in 2013.
A less-acknowledged gladiator drama, marking its 15th anniversary on Starz, is causing audiences to cheer again. Developed by Sam Raimi, director of Spider-Man, and Steven S. DeKnight, it delivered a violent, erotic historical narrative that some view as a precursor to shows like Game of Thrones. Despite failing to attain those pinnacles, especially with critics, the blend of grand production, intense violence, and frequent nudity kept the series alive for four seasons until its 2013 finale.
It’s quite intriguing why Spartacus is currently leading the charts after being overlooked for years. Back in 2023, news broke out that DeKnight was developing a sequel series, which was ten years after the fourth season – titled War of the Damned – first aired. Known as Spartacus: House of Ashur, it was disclosed in January 2025 that this new 10-episode series will air on Starz later this year. With the release date still several months away, it appears that many fans are catching up with the original series ahead of its return.
Created by Sam Raimi, renowned for his work on Evil Dead and Spider-Man, Spartacus was a lively, gritty blend of fictionalized historical events, intense action sequences, graphic violence, and sexual content reminiscent of Game of Thrones. The initial season focused on the legendary Thracian gladiator Spartacus (previously portrayed by the late Andy Whitfield), who instigated a rebellion among slaves against the Roman Republic. Despite its popularity among viewers, the series didn’t quite reach its full potential in terms of viewership, particularly when Game of Thrones debuted a year later and dominated the historical epic genre.
During the first season of “Spartacus”, Whitfield was diagnosed with early-stage non-Hodgkin lymphoma. As a result, the second season was produced as a prequel due to his illness. Sadly, Whitfield passed away in 2011. In light of this, it was decided that the next season would continue with Liam McIntyre stepping into the role of Spartacus.
‘Spartacus’ Is Well Worth a Watch
Although numerous adaptations of Spartacus have emerged, as well as countless historical dramas and films exploring similar themes, Spartacus‘s portrayal stood out with an intriguing blend of Shakespearean drama and grindhouse style. It encompassed the typical Roman political intrigue, filled with betrayals, passionate love stories, and expertly staged, gory battle sequences. However, this exploration of sex, power, and brute strength did not garner favorable reviews from critics, who bestowed a split 52% Tomatometer score upon its first season – a stark contrast to the 87% audience approval rating.
The ensuing seasons of this show received consistently positive feedback from viewers, with Season 2 – Gods of the Arena – reaching a high of 93% on Popcornmeter. Even critics took a liking to it, as the following three seasons garnered scores ranging from 63% to 73%. Now, a new group of fans are getting introduced to Spartacus before its return to screens this fall.
The upcoming show, titled “House of Ashur“, is posed as: “Suppose Ashur (Nick Tarabay) hadn’t perished on Mount Vesuvius at the conclusion of ‘Spartacus: Vengeance’. And what if he had been bestowed with the gladiator school previously belonging to Batiatus, in exchange for aiding the Romans in annihilating Spartacus and thereby quelling the slave uprising?
Together with Tarabay, the team will feature Graham McTavish playing Korris, Ashur’s Doctore, and Tenika Davis portraying Achillia, a formidable gladiatrix. At the same time, Steven S. DeKnight, the original creator, writer, and executive producer of Spartacus, returns as showrunner and executive producer. With this upcoming series, it appears there’s no better moment to revisit the initial four seasons on Starz before stepping back into the arena again.
