Sandra Oh Doubles Reel Asian Film Fest Donation to $100K

As a gamer who has been deeply invested in the world of cinema, particularly in the representation and portrayal of Asian characters, I am absolutely thrilled by Sandra Oh’s recent actions. Her consistent advocacy for Asian storytelling and her significant donation to the Toronto Reel Asian Film Festival is truly inspiring.

Sandra Oh increased her contribution to the Toronto Reel Asian Film Festival for award distribution to a total of $100,000.

At the Toronto Film Festival, the actress from Killing Eve increased her donation by an additional $50,000, bringing her total contributions to the Reel Asian Fire Horse Award to $100,000 over a period of five years.

Speaking at the reception, a long-time advocate for Asian narratives expressed, “Though we have our place and room now, it’s crucial that we focus on cultivating people, and this is the perfect platform for us to do so.” Following her stint as Dr. Cristina Yang on ABC’s medical drama ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, Oh has been a strong supporter of stories delving into the Asian American experience.

This week, the Korean-Canadian actor was in Toronto, serving as the honorary co-chair for the TIFF Tribute Awards held on Sunday night. Additionally, he attended two screenings: the 30th anniversary showing of Mina Shum’s “Double Happiness,” where he played a role, and the world premiere of Ann Marie Fleming’s “Can I Get A Witness,” in which he portrayed Ellie.

In 2021, the Reel Asian Fire Horse Award was established as a tribute to Anita Lee, the founder of Reel Asian and the Chief Programming Officer at the Toronto Film Festival. Notable recipients of this award in the past include Keith Lee, Mary Stephen, and Paul Wong.

Lately, Oh has been involved in a variety of projects. One of them is “The Sympathizer,” an espionage thriller adapted from Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, “The Sympathizer.” This work explores the challenges faced by a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy in the final days of the Vietnam War. Additionally, she has provided her voice to animated productions such as “Over the Moon” and “Raya and the Last Dragon.
