As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for immersive experiences and a soft spot for coastal vistas, I must say that the Sandbourne Santa Monica has piqued my interest like no other gaming level ever could. The art program, the ceramic-filled oasis, the honeybee hive, and the full-service wellness spa opening in 2025 – it’s all shaping up to be a real-life adventure that rivals even the most intricately designed video game worlds.

Santa Monica has a gorgeous new place to stay right by the beach.

As someone who has traveled extensively along California’s coastline, I must say that the recent opening of The Sandbourne Santa Monica, part of the Autograph Collection, is a truly remarkable addition to the Ocean Avenue scene. Previously known as Le Merigot Santa Monica, this luxury hotel has undergone a stunning transformation, and it now stands proudly overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

At Sandbourne, art plays a significant role, as evidenced by the large-scale mural created by Guerin Swing. Additionally, visitors are encouraged to participate in the creative journey. As Jessica Rincon, the managing director, explains, “Art and creation are deeply ingrained in our values at Sandbourne.” To reflect this, we host an ‘Artist in Residence’ program that showcases ceramics artists within our lobby. Moreover, every Saturday, we offer a complimentary clay class where guests can create their own pinch-pot pottery – a unique experience exclusively for hotel patrons.

Additionally, you’ll find various options that resemble high-end condominium living rather than traditional vacation spots. These come equipped with practical facilities such as an indoor-outdoor fitness center, electric vehicle charging stations, and the ever-popular fire pits on the lush, spacious patio. For pet owners, there’s even a designated dog park. Every evening, a soothing incense ritual takes place, and for those interested in a unique experience, there’s a honeybee hive on site.

At Sandbourne Santa Monica with prices starting at $459 per night, you can also book a room via Expedia, Hotels.com, or Booking.com.

The Sandbourne’s onsite restaurant, Marelle, was also designed by architect Jónsdóttir, who also contributed to the ceramics theme. Handcrafted pendant lamps, designed by Jónsdóttir and L’Aviva Home, are produced in Oaxaca, Mexico. The restaurant specializes in coastal California cuisine under the guidance of local chef Raphael Lunetta from Santa Monica’s Lunetta restaurant. Offerings at Marelle include hamachi crudo with jalapeño kaffir lime ponzu, grilled Jidori chicken served over stone-ground polenta with roasted peppers, summer peaches, and shishito peppers, and California sea bass cooked in banana leaves.

At the bar, carefully assembled by beverage director Amanda Fewster, the focus is on showcasing spirits from locally owned businesses that are BIPOC-run and female-led. The drinks are imaginative and vibrant, with “La Vie En Rosé,” a creative reinterpretation of the traditional paloma, being a prime example. Served in a custom clay cup and accompanied by a pair of rose-tinted glasses for patrons to don, this drink brings a touch of whimsy to the setting. However, in the tranquil realm of Sandbourne, it appears that such accessories meant to elevate moods are unnecessary.
