Saoirse Ronan Confirms Turning Down Black Widow MCU Role

As a seasoned critic with a penchant for films spanning various genres and universes, I must confess that the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has been a constant source of intrigue and excitement. The recent revelation that Saoirse Ronan, a formidable talent in her own right, was almost cast as Yelena Belova in the MCU is an interesting what-if scenario that leaves me pondering the paths not taken.

Initially, it was nearly a different outcome as Florence Pugh, who is currently a major star in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, wasn’t initially cast for her role. Instead, Saoirse Ronan might have been chosen to play Yelena Belova, Black Widow’s sister. This character was first introduced in 2021’s Black Widow, starring Scarlett Johansson, and later appeared in Disney+’s Hawkeye. She is also set to wear the white costume again in Thunderbolts. However, events unfolded such that Pugh landed the part instead.

Ronan was questioned about potentially accepting a part in an interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. However, she mentioned she wasn’t certain if she was close to being chosen for the role within Marvel’s Cinematic Universe. To clarify, she holds no grudge against Marvel, but she doesn’t envision herself becoming part of the MCU.

“I can’t see myself doing Marvel,” she said. “I don’t… No, I would prefer to do Bond.”

It was often speculated that Ronan might compete for the role of Yelena, but at this stage, it seems unlikely anyone else but Pugh would be chosen to portray her. Yet, the idea of the actress from “Lady Bird” entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe is intriguing. However, she doesn’t see herself in that world, but only speaks highly of Marvel.

She shared with Horowitz that she holds [Marvel] films in high regard and considers them exceptional. Furthermore, she expressed her desire to be involved in larger-scale productions. She added that despite her passion for independent cinema, it’s a privilege in today’s film industry landscape to know that a movie will reach a wide audience.

When do we see Yelena again in the MCU?

Although it may not feel like too long ago, Yelena’s last appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was in “Hawkeye,” which came out in 2021. However, we’ve been anticipating her return, and that will occur in the 2025 film “Thunderbolts.” This movie is slated for release on May 2, marking the end of Phase 5 of the MCU. Intriguingly, “Thunderbolts” will assemble a diverse group of characters from different films and series, including Yelena working alongside Bucky Barnes (played by Sebastian Stan) and John Walker (Wyatt Russell), for the first time on screen.

In “Thunderbolts,” Julia Louis-Dreyfus will once again take on her character Valentina Allegra De Fontaine, a role she first played in “Falcon and the Winter Soldier.” Additionally, Harrison Ford is set to appear as Thaddeus Ross, making this his second appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), having previously starred in “Captain America: Brave New World,” following the passing of William Hurt who initially portrayed the role. While details about the plot are scarce, trailers have given us some insight. Since “Thunderbolts” is expected to conclude Phase 5, it’s possible that we might see some significant cameos as well, hinting at future events in the MCU.
