As a lifelong fan of the magical world J.K. Rowling has created, hearing Saoirse Ronan reminisce about her missed chance to play Luna Lovegood in the Harry Potter series struck a chord with me. While I’m thrilled that Evanna Lynch brought Luna to life so beautifully, I can’t help but wonder what it would have been like to see Saoirse’s unique take on the eccentric Ravenclaw student.
Saoirse Ronan is looking back on the role that got away.
On Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the actress was questioned by the host about any previous characters she regretted not having the opportunity to portray during her Thursday appearance.
Ronan mentioned that there have been instances where she regrets decisions afterward, thinking, ‘Oh dear, I made a mistake.’ However, one moment that has lingered is when she didn’t secure the role, but didn’t reject it either. She lost out again, which seems to be a pattern for her. Earlier in the conversation, Ronan and Kimmel joked about how she’s lost in the Oscar competition despite being nominated four times.
She later shared, “I had tried out for Luna Lovegood in Harry Potter years back. That role required an Irish character, so they invited almost half of Ireland to audition.
Ronan shared that she realized she wouldn’t secure the role due to being too young, yet, she had the amazing opportunity to read a scene from the upcoming “Harry Potter” movie, which was simply fantastic!
Evanna Lynch portrayed Luna Lovegood, a character who made her debut in “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix,” which premiered in 2007. That same year, Saoirse Ronan’s film “Atonement” was also released. Remarkably, at just 13 years old, Ronan received her first Oscar nomination for her performance in that movie.
A Harry Potter TV production titled “Max” is progressing, set to premiere in 2026. Francesca Gardiner will serve as the writer and showrunner for this series, while Mark Mylod is lined up to direct several episodes.
HBO characterizes this upcoming series as a loyal interpretation of J.K. Rowling’s renowned young wizard novels, promising a fresh cast to captivate a new wave of fans, brimming with the intricate details and beloved characters that have enchanted Harry Potter enthusiasts for over two decades.
