Sarah Desjardins Reveals Shocking Secrets About Callie in Yellowjackets Season 3!

[This story contains spoilers through season three, episode four of Yellowjackets.]

Yellowjackets has planted several mysteries to be unraveled in its third season.

In the latest episode of Showtime’s series, character Adult Lottie Matthews met her untimely demise, sparking a mystery about who was responsible. Actress Simone Kessell, portraying Lottie in the adult storyline, confided to The Hollywood Reporter that Christina Ricci’s character Misty will take on the role of detective and attempt to unravel the circumstances surrounding Lottie’s death. The solution to this mystery is expected to be revealed in the season finale.

The TV series created jointly by Ashley Lyle, Bart Nickerson, and Jonathan Lisco introduces various intriguing subplots to ponder over. For instance, we are left wondering about the enigmatic aspects of the wilderness and the whereabouts of Coach Ben (Steven Krueger). Moreover, a specter seems to be tormenting grown-up Shauna (Melanie Lynskey), while her daughter Callie (played by Sarah Desjardins) discovered a mysterious cassette tape in the season opener.

I spilled the beans to THR that the enigmatic cassette is set to take center stage this season. What’s more, the intricate narrative surrounding it was one of the concepts Nickerson and I brainstormed back in the day when pitching our show idea to Showtime.

Desjardins expresses her eagerness for the audience to witness the unfolding events, given that she was part of the journey during filming.

In our initial meeting at the start of the series, the showrunners hinted that I would be part of a certain plotline without revealing its specifics. So, as we filmed the season and received the scripts, I was just as puzzled as everyone else, thinking, “What on earth am I supposed to do with this? It feels like we’re delving into the heart of whatever’s happening here.” However, it was a mystery for me too. As the story unfolded throughout the season, it turned out to be quite intriguing and thrilling.

There’s quite a buzz and various perspectives about Callie, Shauna’s only daughter, who tragically lost her baby brother in the wilderness. As viewers delve deeper into season three’s timeline set in 1996, it becomes clear that Callie was a formidable presence among the teenage Yellowjackets soccer team when they were forced to survive in the wilderness for 18 months following their plane crash.

In the third installment, Lottie became intrigued by the enigma surrounding Callie, prompting her visit to Shauna’s family upon her discharge from a psychiatric hospital. It’s evident now that Lottie had more than just a need for shelter in New York City, as her motive for knocking on Shauna’s door seemed to be something else. Maybe it was to spend time with Callie, who has always been fascinated by her mother’s experiences in the wilderness.

However, when Lottie handed Callie the familiar heart pendant, saying, “It didn’t carry the significance you assumed,” Shauna erupted in anger and immediately asked Lottie to leave, realizing that by giving Callie their emblem, Lottie was marking her daughter as a sacrifice to the wilderness.

In conversation with THR following Lottie’s sudden demise, Kessell shared Lottie’s intrigue towards Shauna’s daughter. “She found it intriguing that perhaps she’s the chosen one from the wilderness,” Kessell stated. “I believe it was more about Shauna’s point of view, making her wonder, ‘What? What does my daughter know?’

Discussions on Reddit, centered around fans of the horror series that follows a character’s growth, have speculated for quite some time about Callie potentially having a significant part in the creators’ future plans for the show. Some enthusiasts have even proposed the idea that Callie could be the mysterious “Pit Girl” – who was initially shown being pursued and apparently killed in the wilderness at the start of the series – if this were the case, it would drastically change many other theories.

As the seasons progress, it’s become increasingly rewarding for us to explore Callie’s intricacies further, and this is done most extensively in season three compared to any other season, according to Desjardins.

Does that mean viewers will get some of these questions answered about Callie in season three?

She assures the fans they’ll receive some clarification, yet there will be even more unanswered queries – it’s an intriguing exploration into her thoughts and feelings throughout the season,” she expresses, adding that she gained a better understanding of herself by its conclusion.

As I reflect on Callie’s shocking school prank from the season premiere, it seems to me that she’s standing up for her mother like Shauna did, only we might not have realized it before. You know, just like how Shauna memorably started off the show by taking a life in her own garden, Callie has now left a trail of animal guts targeted at school bullies who were spreading rumors about her mom.

Desjardins explains that Callie’s behavior after the season two finale, following the death of Adult Nat (portrayed by Juliette Lewis), stems from a deep love for her mother and a desire to protect her. According to him, Callie is becoming more attuned to the emotions within herself, sensing something but not fully understanding it. Part of her actions were rebellious, yet another part was seeking a way to connect with her mom. So when Shauna reacts by watching the video, Desjardins believes that Callie is taken aback but also sees this moment as a potential opportunity to bond with her mother.

It’s still not certain exactly what Callie is aware of regarding her mother’s actions in the wilderness, particularly following Lottie’s sleepover and her encounter with that secret video. Desjardins notes that Callie will be exploring further to discover more details this season.

The specifics of what Callie understands about her mom’s activities in the wilderness are still hazy, especially after Lottie’s sleepover and finding that hidden tape. Desjardins mentions that Callie is on a quest for more information this season.

In the second season, Callie was working to grasp her mother better and uncover the truth, which we saw hints of. This theme continues in season three, but it’s now rooted in her introspective journey as she delves deeper into self-understanding. This personal exploration is what’s propelling her actions this season, making it intriguing to observe how her relationship with Shauna evolves, as well as how her connection with her father Jeff [Warren Kole] changes in an unexpected manner.

She concludes, “It’s chaotic, it’s challenging, it’s amusing, it’s sorrowful, it’s ominous, and it encompasses various emotions.
